Official NEO U9-H: 008FW

Just saying that for what i paid i expected a longer "lifespan" to this box.
The only way to upgrade the u9 to Android 7 is to connect it to a pc and manually upgrade it. And the firmware is developed by the community not official Minix. So most users are stuck with Android 6. Compare that to a box with Android 9 and continuous ota updates until 2020. Which one do you think is gonna be outdated sooner? Sooner or later the apps we all use will have no more updates to Android older versions.
We have to wait if OTA upgrade will be available to stable nougat. Until that only manual upgrade.
In my opinion it is always good to know how to do a manual upgrade , because we learn a new method, we learn something new ☺.
I always like to know, learn new things and test ☺

And yes as @CybeRider said android TV is "limited".
Pure android is for me much better.

Regarding what is said so far, don't misunderstand me.
I find of great value that members of this community are developing an adapted version of a more advanced Android version. I hope minor things that are not perfect will eventually improve. Having full compatibility with Chrome back would be nice, having 4k to play in a web browser again would be nice.

i expected a longer "lifespan" to this box.
Longer than ?
Does everything i need and no complains so far.
I agree!
I have two in daily use and one that's away with my daughter in university.... no major issue's. Hers actually ended up in her dorm floor common area for movie nights ! :)
Netflix from time to time I need to test different versions. In saying that, coming from a family that uses Netflix as our main streaming app. it really hasn't been that much of a hassle ..... So far !;)

Extra features, speed improvements, compatibility with apps on the google play store, and most of all security updates and bug fixes.

That is not entirely true. For instance, Chrome still works great in the U1 which has an older OS version than the U9-H one, while some flaws can be found in the recent updates of the browser in the U9-H.

Speed improvement? Do you really have any speed related issues in the U9-H? I really don't feel my movies should play any faster. New versions tend to be heavier than the previous ones and speed soon requires new hardware to cope with the changes.

The incompatibility with apps from the PlayStore are mostly because of the device certification and that has to do with Google, a new OS won't change that.

Other well known OS have proven to be much less reliable in what security breaches concern apart from being daily updated for a price, than Android OS machines.

But you are absolutely entitled to keep your opinion and be unhappy about your devices if you feel like it. I do praise my ease of mind with my entertainment equipments as other sides of life require my full attention for a constantly updating reality. It is nice to turn my box on at the end of the day and enjoy its great power to steadily perform what it does very well every day.

Windows XP still works great too, nice and stable just like fw008, also no longer supported, out of date, full of security holes.

ABC iVeiw doesn't work not work from google play store for example, is that because of device certification? I'm sure it's nothing to do with minix who built the device and decided on using an unsupported version of android???

Sounds like some minix fan bois love running old apps, trolling forums to find work arounds to get the device working the way it should out of the box! But whatevs if minix sell a product and does't want to keep it up to date, don't want to take efforts to get their devices certified, and doesn't make them easy to use, hey that's their loss $$$$ customers like me won't come back....

The OS you mention is a good example of why you can't compare things that can't be compared. The machine required to run that system cost close to a month of an average salary those days, few to none apps (programs) were free, the majority had to be bought with a pile of gold, and in what security is concerned, no one could trust that system to be left alone without a strong security software watching it, that software was also quite expensive. And I recall most software, taylor made don't forget it, having funny behavior to the point of needing to restart the computer over and over, not to mention the time it cost having to wait for all the updates to install almost every single day. Probably you liked it, or maybe you forgot about it, or maybe you never used it. Because I had a business to run, it cost me hours, eventually weeks of inaction looking at a colorful screen, and trouble and headaches, is that your best example?... Yet I still have two of those machines working and probably doing more than they were expected to do, because having a computer to do some work depends not only of the software and hardware but also of exploiting the capabilities of the package together with the needs of the user. But mainly because I feel the money I invested in those will probably cost me the lifetime to get back even if those machines keep on working to the end of my days!

A Minix box costs roughly the price of five meals, it gets to you as a final product capable of performing a lot of very useful tasks. You were never asked for an extra payment to get the updates you got, which were by the way a lot more than you could get to equivalent mobile phone devices, and you have the nerve to ask a company to keep providing updates after all this time to a final product that was and still is a great one up to the end of the world for free?

(What other Pure Android box has Google certification? If you can find one, what knowledge do you have to claim Minix doesn't want to take efforts to get their devices certified?)

One of the differences between boys and men is that men had a chance to play with Legos years ago, they aged and spending the days assembling and disassembling stuff for fun is a step long gone.

I think you got disappointed with the Minix box because it didn't, for some reason, correspond to your expectations.
Well, I have bad news for you. You got somehow convinced this forum is for haters or moaners and that the ones like me are here to troll you around, well I don't know exactly to whom you can complain about it, but this forum is probably not the product you expect either. And in this last statement I am really, from my heart, trying to help you.

anyone else having issues formatting sdcard as internal storage? Jumps to 20% then exits and says unsupported in the storage menu.

@minixtr I don't having issues formatting sdcard as internal storage in Neo U9-H.You can try connect with adapter in usb port on pc and see is it working. Also you can format on pc in fat32,ntfs and exfat to see is it working right your micro sd card. Also which brand is your sd card but i don't think that's important.

I dont use sd card.
Is your sd card new?
Are you using for a time (worked well) and now it started to work that way?
Issues only with formatting ?

See also what @mark lob said.

I just wonder, the company minix still alive?
No updates any more
No new products
Old products are always on not available on the webshop

As a security professional, this is what bothers me the most with running obsolete unsupported OS'
Although as opposed to XP, most Android apps are still updated. A weak kernel is still a big concern.

I, like many others, predict vulnerable obsolete IOTs will have an important role in the next big war(s).
