Minix X8-H - FW flashing issues

Hi guys,

Back to the future here on this 3rd revived Minix forum (1st time used it some good years ago)...

I have an "old" Neo X8-H with the "latest" 009FW (20160328), which is still running great. I also have couple of apps which are not working anymore, as they requires Android 5.0 as minimum (like HBO GO).

I also have from the old forum a Probox Lollipop 5.1.1 FW, which seems to be based on the original PROBOX2-EX+-20161221 firmware, that was patched with few things (like theMinix boot logo, Minix remote conf file etc).
I tried to burn the image with 3 different burning tools:
- v2.2.5.15 (that was bunvled with the FW metioned),
- v2.1.6
- v2.0.6.2 provided by @MINIX - John with the 009 FW

I remember few years ago it worked fine with last FW tool mentioned above to flash FW (back then I had Windows 7), though now I cannot flash any FW, as the burning tool does not connect to my X8-H. I tried with 3 different laptops, different USB 2.0 ports, using the original OTG cable that I had in my X8-H box.
All my 3 laptops are running latest Windows 10.
Minix boots correctly into the recovery mode, as I can see it on my TV screen, while connected to my laptop also, but any of the 3 burning tools do not connect to the box. I tried also running the burning tools either as administrator, or normally.

Is there any trick to flash a FW under Windows 10 that I don't remember?
I see @Villa or @Skynet are still around, so hello guys :)

Any hints?

Hello and welcome :).

Please try these:

-disable temporarily your antivirus/firewall
-uninstall applications that can block usb burning tool
-use only the power cable, Original OTG to USB cable to flash firmware (don´t connect anything more to the minix)
You can connect the rest when you have sucess.
-try with another usb port and don´t use usb 3.0 port.
-once you download the firmware and install usb burning tool disable internet connection (use only the basic)

Use latest amlogic tools:

Flash firmware:

Hi @notrui,

Thanks for the hints, however I already tried all the ones you mentioned, still no luck. I just used also the latest burning tool also (v2.1.7.1) posted by Skynet in the thread you mentioned.
There is nothing else connected to my Minix, other than power and the original OTG cable. Connected it again to the 6 USB 2.0 ports on my 3 Win 10 laptops. Internet disconnected, no antivirus running, stopped the VM with my Pihole.
I kept pressed (several times, even more than 20 sec) both the recovery & power button, still nothing pops up in the burning tool, there's no device shown there.

I'll give up today and leave it with the 009FW stuff...

Ok. You can try later again if you want.

If you try again do this first:

-Leave the box with nothing connected for a while (1 hour for example) , (no power cable , no hdmi cable, etc) and then connect again what you need.

-if still does not work for you try more times ( in different days for example, sometimes is better instead of several times in a row).

Are the USB drivers (World Cup) definitely installing on your PC when you install the USB Burning Tool itself?

I'm not being funny, but you are remembering to unzip the FW image before proceeding, yes ;)? (It does get forgotten sometimes, am just checking ;). However, it certainly reads like you know what you're doing :).)

Is the USB Burning Tool able to successfully load (import) the FW image you're attempting to flash before you attempt to connect the OTG cable?

Failing that & everything else you've tried, do you have a friend/family that can install the burning tool to their PC for you temporarily to flash your device? (Some PC's come with preloaded software or drivers that conflict with the burning tool & they're not always easy to determine or identify. Another PC may be your only alternative at this point given everything you've already attempted.)

Hopefully another PC will be quick & easy :).

Yes to:
- world cup drivers successful installed with all burning tools used
-unzipped the FW, it's seen - loaded correctly in the burning tool(s), before connecting the OTG cable.

I still have 3 more PCs to try, though all with Win 10. I may try to build a Win 7 VM also to see if it works.
What I haven't done yet is to grab a glass of red wine before proceeding to any step... ?

You can try with a virtual machine but i don´t advice you, i also never tried and i don´t know if it works.

The best in my opinion and for better compatibility with your device is windows 7 (real machine :)).

Oh, extremely good timing. I've pulled my "Neo-X8H-Plus" out of the cupboard and am attempting to update.

Current FW version: *unknown*... last time I used the Minix was Aug-2016... and pretty sure I remember it being Android.

The Minix connected straight away to my Win10 Surface Pro... dont have any 'World Cup' drivers, don't have the 'USB burning tool'... just the power and the OTG cable [to my surface Pro USB3 slot]... pressed power (not factory reset) and Win10 recognised the connection and after ~3mins had done whatever it needed to do to recognise the Minix... happens to be identified as a "phone n200" network device!

I'll update this thread as/ when I make progress.

You are hijacking a bit my thread... :)

Just remember that my Minix is NOT the Plus version. It's pretty normal to see your Minix as an external USB drive, the way you connected it to your MS Surface Pro (I guess it's the tablet).
There is only one way to flash a (new) FW, and that is via the burning tool. Looks like you had Finless Lollipop ROM on your X8-H Plus?
How did you flashed it?
I remember the burning tool used to work on one of my old Win7 laptops, though I don't have anymore any Win7 PC.

LOL, kk, you'd better make that a bottle of the red I reckon ;) :)!!

I use a relatively recent Win 10 gaming laptop to flash my U9-H's & I've never experienced any issues, it even works fine using USB 3 port as well whereas many others have to ensure they use a USB 2 port.

Obviously the X8-H is an older device. It may just be the first laptop you tried or it could be Win 10 period just not liking/compatible with the older device :(.

Have you tried running the USB Burning Tool in Win Vista/Win 7/Win 8 compatability modes as a final thought? (I doubt it'll make any difference but it's worth trying on the off chance before resorting to additional systems ;).)

Good luck :).

The same situation. I think I tried everything and still didn't preinstall to lolipop. I tried all operating systems (XP,7,10). Earlier with the official updates I reinstalled many, many times with out problem. People, what is this thing, what is diferent now? I read your post and try everithing what you sugest but withot result.

I think your real problem is that minix driver is not installed properly on windows, in my situation is windows 7 64bit.
First i install amlogic usb burning tool v1.2.8.817, download amlogic driver then unzip n copy content of driver folder to the driver folder of amlogic burning tool 1.2.8. now execute imageburningtool.exe you would see the dos command window tried to install the worldcup driver on pc, on few try it will successfully installed, you should check it on device manager.
The problem here is amlogic burning tool 1.2.8 cant flash img files, so when the driver is installed properly on pc, install usb burning tool v2.1.7.1 and bypass the driver setup itself. Now you can launch the tool 2.1.7.1 to flash img files.
Hope it would help.

Hi.
If you installed many times you already know the process.
Try win 7 for better compatibilty.
Use only minix and the pc.

PC: disable antivírus/firewall and use a minimal setup.
Minix: use only power cable and original otg cable (nothing more connected)

Once the minix is recognized with amlogic burning tool you should be able to flash.

Maybe you have something blocking the flash process.
