If there is no hardware, software will not be usable. But if there is hardware, software can be added later.
As a result, Having hardware is very valuable, even if it's not software at the moment.
basically all of this (click) needs to happen, it's a good read. scroll a bit to the dolby vision pipeline diagram.
if the Minix team has implemented all the proper decoders they will be the first vendor to do so and these units will sell like hotcakes.

i understand what you are saying to me not knowing when the minix u22 xj was out i just did a google search on the minix u22 xj went to the site that was showing the item i did see it was for pre-order and i did`nt know that they was going to send it out to me i thought i was going to have to wait for the the item being on the pre-order but i payed for it and they shipped it out to me and when i got it i came to find out that they sold me the item ahead of time and not with the firmware that it supposed so i got in-touch with minix and they told me to wait for the o.t.a firmware then they i will have the right firmware. but the box is running with no problems so far

and no i am not a resller
I am very sorry for this situation.
You should certainly be able to obtain a full refund from the reseller you purchased from, if you do not wish to wait until the O.T.A Firmware Update.

I have an HDR question. How does the U22 handle HDR if you do not have an HDR TV?

If I have a source 10 bit HDR file and the U22 is attached to an 8 bit SDR TV, what will the image look like? My current experience with HDR sources played with a U9H and viewed on my 8 bit SDR TV is that the image is quite dark and essentially unwatchable during night/dark scenes.

I think it could be possible, but to be sure we must wait for the consumer release firmware.

I dont think it will be. There may well be a switch to set HDR > SDR ( as on the T5) but whereas it may stop a HDR TV from switching to HDR mode the picture will still be "washed out " for a media file encoded with HDR.

Have you tried turning HDR off in U9 minix display settings, but i still think it will look "washed out" as the media file is encoded with HDR.

Where is this HDR switch located? I am running CoreElec, not android.

My experience with HDR files is not a washed out picture, but a too dark picture. Is there a setting I have missed, or set wrong (again I am running CoreElec, not android).

What device are you asking about ? U9 ?...... things are swaying from the OP here!

Reading all the posts about the new Neo U22XJ box and cant wait to get my hands on one. Just one question, I know that the Neo T5 is Android TV OS but can the Neo U22 XJ be upgraded to the Android TV OS as well ?

what do you guys think are the main advantages of using android os v android tv on a media box?

Keeping it relatively simple....

Android TV is primarily developed in the knowledge that the devices it's installed on will be static, & it's designed to be clean & light. It's also designed to function around a basic TV style remote alone. As such, the availability of typical apps (Play Store) & how you can interact with those apps is much more limited.

Pure Android by design obviously originated on mobile devices but what we see on our media hubs is a version developed to remove all of the unnecessary mobile features. It's also considerably more complex & versatile than ATV with a broader range of features. The pure Android media hubs typically have access to many of the same apps that are available on mobile devices too which opens up a huge range of possibilities in direct comparison to ATV. Obviously these media hubs don't have their own touchscreens but an airmouse/keyboard interface (or a traditional mouse/keyboard if you wish) still allows them to be a very powerful tool indeed :).

I know a lot of people who own a shield and have never had any problems with them. But at the same time if you visit the shield forum apart from it being very disorganised (the MINIX forum is far superior) the shield seems riddled with software problems. So this is a great opportunity for the new U22-XJ to outshine the shield when released next month.
