Kodi 18 b5 is out

Useful to know, I could replace my Kodi 17.6 on my Android boxes with the apk from Kodi website, then wait for Leia to be fixed for Android before upgrading.
yes, create a backup of your current kodi set up using kodi backup addon and then restore that to your fresh install of kodi

Do you know how they got theirs to work?

Firstly, Kodi 18 LEIA RC5 onwards is totally rewritten with new code providing more flexibility and new functionality. Please note that some skins and addons will no longer work with this version, so you have been warned.

The first thing to do is remove all versions of Kodi including the MINIX xmbc versions. Ensure all folders and contents are removed leaving no traces of previous versions. A cleaner app like SD Maid might be a good tool to use and check.

Once cleaned, install Kodi 18 RC5. DO NOT RUN

Make sure your SD Card is inserted and is a FAST Class 10 or above speed. Slow cards will slow down Kodi. USB can be used if you have a micro drive such as the Samsung MUF-BB 64 GB USB 3.0 MicroFit Flash Drive

Create the file using a text editor:-
xbmc_env.properties

https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Change_data_location_for_Android

Once Kodi is run for the first time, it will save all of Kodi's data to the SD Card/USB Drive

Now you run Kodi 18 RC5 for the first time. Let it do it's thing and create the file/folder structure on the newly setup configuration.

Once it's finished and the ENTER FILES screen appears. EXIT KODI.

Now we are going to speed up network streaming by the way of an XML file called:

advancedsettings.xml

https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache

Place this file in the ROOT of the internal storage. Settings will be according to your network performance

These are my settings

Now RUN KODI 18 RC5 again with the new XML file.

Now setup Kodi as before. As I said above, RC5 will have broke skins and addons. This maybe a huge problem for some, but Kodi is moving forward and won't go back to the old code. These measures are to make cross platform coding far easier.

Curious as to why you think having Kodi save its data to an SD card is beneficial ?

If you have a skin that uses fanart for TV, MOVIES, MUSIC etc etc and PVR etc, it's best to let Kodi have enough space to do it without fear of taking up internal storage. It then leaves the MINIX Internal storage for other apps rather than Kodi files leaving nothing left to use

fair enough i guess but in the all the years i have been using kodi ( and years prior when it was xbmc !) with skins that utilse fan art and widgets in a similar scenario as to what you describe I have never had to use external memory.

It's up to people how they use the Box. If people use it for other things that require internal storage, and remember this is Lollipop and doesn't allow you to extend your external storage as internal, it makes sense to configure apps to make best use of your system. Obviously that's what I use, others have asked how mine works and that's my method and installation that for me works 100%. If others use this method and it makes Kodi 17/18 work perfectly, then my help hasn't been in-vain.
