hi all. I'm new here,,
I recently bought one of these Neo u22 - XJ boxes and although great, its giving problems,
Quite often it just stalls and crashes, I have to power it down to get it working again.
I do maintenance on it closing running apps etc, but still the same.
Any ideas please,
Thanks, noel

Has this always been the case or just since updating to 006A? Is it happening randomly or when using specific apps, or a specific function like video playback?

For now I would suggest:
- Clearing app cache via Settings/Device Preferences/Storage/Internal shared storage/Cached data
- Clearing the system cache through recovery menu
- If you don't have too much to lose then a factory reset (all settings and data will be erased)
- And lastly a firmware flash to make sure this is not being caused by corruption in the system somewhere (again, all settings and data will be erased)

I would also not rule out a faulty PSU, see if you can find one with similar specs to rule that out, see from @Villa here:

Only have it about 3 weeks. Was OK or a week. Just happens anytime doesn't matter what your doing really. I've just cleared the cache as u suggested, it was dong it before I updated the firmware to
See if that makes a difference, then maybe a reset. I'll contact the shop tommorow too if it persists.
Thanks for your help

Returned the box and got a replacement one, still have an issue sometimes it just crashes,, would it be that I'm using a universal air mouse remote, and not the minix a2 or a3 remote ? Thanks..

Hi Marty, I just registered on this forum, and you are my first post! I have owned one of the older Minix Neo-U9H that I have been very pleased with for years. I was about to purchase a Neo U22-XJ from eBay based on the rumor that it supposedly comes with an option to switch to Root/Unroot. I took the time and read the previous posts, but my dilema is that I'm an American, living in Australia, and failing miserably to communicate with some eBay sellers somewhere in China, just to make sure that I am in-fact buying the correct version. So I thought I check with you guys for some guidance. I am computer savey, but reluctant to buy a new unit that is not exactly what one would idealy consider a "Plug-and-Play", if there is such thing! I just don't want to brick the darn thing straight out of the box! I waited for you guys for years to ramp-up to 4mb RAM. Now I was so excited to get my new toy, but should I wait, or go ahead with the purchase. Please help. Thank you in-advance.

I live in Thailand and bought my U22-XJ on AliExpress. Slow delivery, but that was last year at the start of the pandemic.
Alternatively, you could look for sellers located in Australia. I assume there must be some. Amazon?? Personally, I would avoid ebay.

As for root... I believe there are now two OS versions available. One is rooted, the other is not.

I do not run android on any of my Minix boxes. I have internally installed CoreElec in place of android. CoreElec is Linux based and does little else than run Kodi. Far fewer bugs and playback issues than android. If you NEED android, you can still run CoreElec off an SD card and switch back and forth between android and CoreElec. Lots of info in the forums on how to do that, plus how to install CoreElec internally.

The U22 is really a big step up from the U9H.

Yes there are two MINIX OS versions (rooted and standard):

in addition to coreElec there are also new custom OS:

I already tested slimbox versions :)

My absolute honest opinion, hang on to the U9 for a bit longer, wait for the kinks to be ironed out of the U22 first, keep an eye on the forum and you will know when the time is right. Hardware wise the U22 is a powerhouse and a notable step up from the U9 however the U9 is rock solid on its last firmware and meets the needs of most apps these days.

Hey Marty, thanks for the prompt response. I promise not to hold you to it, but if you had to estimate, would you say the golden FW would most likely be implimented in weeks or month. We are not even factoring the time it would take before we find it on the storeshelves! What are we possibly looking at?! Also, how would someone (like myself) know that I'm in-fact buying the right one by looking at the box?! Will you guys put a little sticker that indicates which particular unit in-fact is capable of toggling between root/unroot. Otherwise, it could easily become a nightmare for both vendors and buyers by having to gamble by opening a sealed box that the customer might not buy because of choosing the wrong box.

I guess for the same reason one would use a label to indicate the OS version, or RAM/ROM capacity. Just a suggestion

If you buy a MINIX NEO U22-XJ then that is what you buy!
You update the firmware to the latest using the FOTA Update app. If you want Rooted firmware you have to manually reflash the device using a PC and the Burning Tool.

@Casey I think you need to do a bit of background reading...all the info is here on the forum and its not hard to find.
There is only 1 official Minix U22 "box"
Firmware updates can be done using the FOTA app included or by manual installation following the guides provided here.

@Marty When the U22 with the "New FW" gets shipped out, how would, lets say Amazon, or eBay seller establish which FW they would be sending me! May be a designated scew number for Amazon, or even better, directly thru Minix "Shopping Cart"!

It will ship with whatever it was flashed with in production. You then check for updates!

I can see this firmware thing has really got you befuddled, I will try my best to explain it to you and hopefully put your mind at rest.

First up, "firmware" is a version of stock Android (AOSP) that has been customized by a vendor like Minix and then flashed onto a device before leaving the factory. Thus the U22-XJ will be shipped with a firmware installed ranging from anything between FW002 to the current FW006a (doubt it though as that is quite new). I would say you are more than likely going to receive a unit now with FW004 installed.

Now, the beauty of Minix products is that they generally receive updated firmware to address certain bugs or issues that have been reported by users on the forum. We are currently on FW006a but still have a few bugs and issues to address so I have no doubt more firmware versions will follow.

Regarding your need for root. Another good thing about Minix is that they provide links for the various versions of firmware that have been released and most recently they have been releasing two versions of a particular firmware release, one that is rooted and one that is not, the one that is not rooted will come to the U22-XJ as a download, known as FOTA (firmware over the air) while the one with a root switch to allow root if so desired requires a manual flash of the firmware via USB Burning Tool. So in a sense the power is in your hands to decide what firmware you want on your U22-XJ, hey if you wanted to know how bad the initial release firmware was then you can flash FW002 onto your unit (not recommended, just an example).

TDLR: long story short, you will receive a U22-XJ, you then decide what firmware you want on it, if you do not require root then you are going to have a straight up plug and play experience which will include the updates via FOTA, if you need root then the extra step of flashing the rooted version of firmware will be required, but understand that if this is the route you take then updates will also require manual flashing as they will not appear via automatic download (FOTA).

Marty, thanks for the explanation. I'm pretty computer savey, but I'm apprehensive (no, more like scared s**tless) of the process. In my paranoid mind, Flashing is a terrifying subject! I have heard (may be not in this case) it is so easy to Brick, or cause permanent damage to the unit. Is what you described is as easy as following a step by step process on a YouTube video?! I've gone through a few different boxs in past, but my old trusty Minix (which was my first box) is still alive and well. I don't want to buy another sub-standard junk box from eBay for almost the same price!!! You see, I have no idea whether the new (pre-installed) firmware will roll out in weeks or months! If it's not too far into the future, then I will follow your original advice to be patient and hold off. I know I'm starting to sound like a little brat stomping his feet and scream out: "I want it NOW!", but sadly, it is the case :(

Grow some balls, do some background reading, read the posts above, stop asking stupid questions and follow the flashing guides in this forum
