Firmware installation instructions for NEO U9-H with the burning tool

MINIX - Martin

Staff member
WARNING: Manually installing the firmware will erase all saved data, content and settings on your MINIX NEO U9-H.

This is what you need to install the firmware.
# NEO U9-H firmware and USB Burning Tool. (
Download firmware and tool here)
# Windows-based PC (minimum Windows 7)
# Micro USB cable that comes with the NEO U9-H

Instructions:
  1. Extract the contents of the downloaded .zip (or .rar) file to a folder.

  2. From the folder, install the flashing tool by double-clicking on "USB_Burning Tool setup_v2.0.9.exe" on the Windows PC. During the process, please allow installation of the driver.

  3. After that, run this software. The user interface shall be the same as the USB Burning Tool.png.
If the interface language is not English, please change the interface language to English by clicking this menu and selecting "English".
    Change language.png

  4. Go to ‘File’ > ‘Import image’, and load the image from the folder.

  5. Then attach the power adapter to the NEO U9-H, and connect NEO U9-H to the Windows PC via the Micro USB cable that comes with the box.

  6. To flash the MINIX NEO U9-H firmware, the power button should be held down for more than 6 seconds, then the ‘USB Burning Tool’ shall identify that the NEO U9-H is connected.
If the USB Burning Tool does not identify the NEO U9-H, please follow these steps.
    Code:
     1) Please re-install the USB Burning Tool, and there’ll be a prompt to remind you to install the driver.
The driver is essential for the Windows-based PC to recognize the NEO U9-H.

     2) Please use a USB2.0 port on your PC to connect to the NEO U9-H, instead of USB3.0.

     3) Please use the USB cable that comes with the box.

     4) If it still does not work, you may have to use another Windows PC.

  7. Do not alter the default (burning) Configuration settings.
Click ‘Start’ to start flashing. Wait until it is finished.

  8. Unplug the Micro USB cable between the PC and U9-H, click "Stop", exit the tool and unplug the U9-H power adapter.

  9. Then re-plug in the power adapter and press power button to start the NEO U9-H. It will take a little while to boot after flashing.

I am missing the cable from the box, will any mini USB cable that fits work?
No...you cannot use a simple phone charging cable...it needs to be a "data" cable as well.....im not aware of an easy way to tell which is which but probably "thicker" cables are more likey to be both charge and data .....
you have to use an OTG cable

Where would I get such a cable?
In my experience thinner or thicker means nothing!
Mobiles usually come with a data cable.
Bluetooth headsets/speakers come with a charging cable.

either way he needs an OTG capable cable , plenty on ebay and amazon if he needs to get one

hopefully you agree that the USB burning method can be problematic in sometimes finding the right PC, USB port and cable combination :D

As far as I know, most of the Micro USB cables are capable of charging and transferring data, while I admit that a certain percentage of Micro USB cables are truly not able to transfer data.
There's a slight difference between the Micro USB cable that comes with the NEO U9-H and the regular Micro USB cable.
It's the metal part on the Micro USB cable that inserts into the NEO U9-H is a bit longer than the regular Micro USB cable.
For example, for the metal part that inert into the NEO U9-H, the cable that comes with the NEO U9-H is 8mm, while the regular Micro USB cable is 6mm.
I don't know the exact length of both metal part of the cables. Just for example.

Thats a good point and another variable to watch out for...I checked the cable i use for USB burning and whilst not the Minix one it does have an 8mm connection. I do know that it only seems to work in one of the 3 uSB 2.0 ports I have on my laptop ;)

Yes, that's true, I have clarified to use USB2.0 rather than USB3.0 in step 5.

The preinstalled firmware on my Minix contained two Youtube versions. I accidentally uninstalled one of them. Now I am left with the general Youtube app that is available in the Play Store, but that App does not work very well for TV. Is there a way I can re-install the other Youtube App without going back to the factory settings?

Use ES File Explorer and navigate to...

I've tried everything. I've tried two versions of the burning tool in USB 3 slots and USB 2 slots on a PC running Win7 and a laptop running win10. The drivers have installed every time. I've tried connecting the Minix first and then running the tool and vice versa in every combination. Both computers recognise the Minix and show it in 'my computer'. But the tool simply will not recognise my (brand new) U9-H. Any ideas at all, please?

Edit - no worries. After another attempt using yet another different USB (2) slot, Win7 finally said there was an error with the driver and the tool worked faultlessly after that. New firmware successfully installed.
