NEO Z83-4: BIOS v1.8

Can't download anything from this site - I'm trying to download and install Ubuntu on my Neo Z83-4. Message from Windows 10:

Just a note - Downloading from the site works on Windows 10 version 1803 on the Z83-4 but the error message above is seen with Windows 10 version 2004 (my "other" PC.)

I was trying to install Ubuntu on a Z83-4 Plus, but consistently got a black screen. I tried to update the bios using these instructions but have bricked my device.

The bios update appeared to complete successfully, but then the device would not come back online. It shows a green LED, with no other indicators. Nothing on the monitor.

I have tried removing the cmos battery, but that did not help. Is there any other method of restoring the device?

Hi. I don´t know if you followed the instructions correctly: (From post 1)
"It is extremely important to check if the "Project Version" in BIOS is started with "CAT0A".
If the "Project Version" starts with "CAT0C", then you can't use this BIOS, otherwise the device will become a brick, no reaction and cannot boot."

Note: (green led)

Green: The motherboard (PCBA) goes wrong, or in a fault state.

To restore the device: (try this)
(i think you flashed the device BIOS with the wrong firmware)

1.Have downloaded me Win 10 Image from Microsoft.
2.Have called rufus down to me.
3.The HDD3.0 is connected to another PC and with Rufus the new image of Windows the (20H2)
to the HDD.
4.Im BIOS still changed the boot order.
And it worked.

Hi guys,

I've just updated my Z83-4 within windows. I used the bios update archive provided in this thread: "https://files.theminixforum.com/shared/bios/Z83-4-BIOS-V1.8-For_Windows.zip".

The instructions above didn't work for me when my windows defender was active and when I executed the "update.bat". So, in order to do the update, I had to disable the windows defender at first and execute the actual executable "afuwinx64.exe" to start the application since the "update.bat" didn't work either.
Well, to successfully do a BIOS update from desktop within windows you must use the windows command prompt app in administrator mode and you need your windows defender or any other antivirus software, disabled.

00. Disable any antivirus application you may have.

01. Click on "start".

02. Type "command".

03. Right click on the command prompt option and choose, "run as administrator".

04. Browse the path to the folder you download and unzipped the archive. I unzipped in the root folder of C:, I suggest you to do the same because sometimes it matters to run applications from the root folder of C:. If you followed my advice, in command prompt just type "CD\" (for change directory) and press "enter" to change the directory to the C: root folder.

05. Then you can either type "dir" (for directory) and press "enter" at first, to file the directory and see it's contents, or simply type "AfuEfix64.efi CHT0A170.bin /p /b /n /x" as the "readme" file of the archive instructs and press "enter" to execute the BIOS update application. The update process will start and after it finishes restart your device and you're done.

In any case that you did not update successfully. DO NOT restart! Seek help in the forums and try to redo the update with another update archive. It helps to be two steps ahead of possible problems and improvise for solutions. I for example, had the previews BIOS archive, also ready to be used in any case of any emergency. If you restart and load any problematic updated BIOS installation you will mostly "brick" your device. If you do not restart, you will be able to still work at your MINIX for a second change, until you do so.

Good luck, and enjoy your MINIX :)

Good evening,

I can't boot from a HDD through USB with BIOS V1.8 ((and yes: 1) the right boot source is selected in the BIOS + 2) the HDD is connected to the USB 3 port + the disk is bootable (tested on another Win 10 PC) ).
But I just noticed now in this stream that this BIOS is not meant for the Z83-4 Pro.
Which is then the best BIOS for the Pro and where can I find it?
I saw "BIOS V1.0" and "V1.1" for Z83-4 Pro on the Minix server ... are these the best and latest version for the Z83-4 Pro.
I am running Windows 19H2 and this version will soon not be supported anymore (after 21H1 is released which will happen in the next weeks ...)
From 20H1 on you need about 32 GB free space on your drive (for a 64 bit OS) to install a new Win 10 version and therefore an external disk is the only way to go (my Z83-4 has a 32GB internal SSD with less than 6 GB free).
I used Macrium Reflect to clone my internal disk to my USB disk (a fast 1TB drive) but I can't boot from it ...
Thanks for any input ...

Disabling eMMC should not be mandatory as long as you boot form the right device (and indeed testing it didn't help me a bit...

and yes I read through the article but honestly ... there is no solution there ... lot of trying but not an happy end
I understand that the best possible outcome is only a "clean install" on an external HDD ... but never a cloned/migrated HDD
