Method to fix the settings menu issue on NEO U1:

Disable the ‘Contact Storage’ app on NEO U1

Go to: ‘Settings’ > ‘Apps’ > ‘Contact Storage’ > ‘Force Stop’ then ‘Disable’

[You can enter the settings menu by clicking on the Weather icon on the MINIX Launcher]

The only problem, if you have thus issue you cannot enter in the settings....

So you have to reflash the original rom (use clear system/cash before)

The solution proposed by Minix-John (I used it myself) concerns the situation when the one set of Settings (the ones accessible by the large cog icon, for those using Metro Launcher) gets broken.

And simultaneously, under those circumstances you can still access the other set of Settings by clicking the Minix Metro clock, as mentioned in the solution above.

I am not aware of any generic occurance that might have had affected this second layer of Settings, and should there be one, the provided solution described doesn't concern it, because it will probably have a different cause, not the Google Contacts app.

Anyway, before having to reflash the box (which is always an intrusive procedure, and maybe not the easiest way), please take into consideration that many applications can be uninstalled (Google Contacts included) from the Playstore, and that can be a simpler solution for an incompatibility.

Same problem here, but got it fixed
Open the notification bar at the top of screen, and expand it.
Click the setting icon, which will get you to advanced settings (if not working first time, try again).
Go to: ‘Settings’ > ‘Apps’ > ‘Contact Storage’ > ‘Force Stop’ then ‘Disable’

Just got the Minix Neo U1 - trying to set it up with my favourites. It doesn't have Netflix so I went onto Google to download the app......now it lets me into Google, even lets me search but won't let me click on anything after that. The screen moves up and down when I press the up/down arrows on the remote control but that's it. Is there a settings thing I need to change?

Thanks guys ... will plod through your suggestions .. will need to be tomorrow now .. let you know how it goes

Managed to get back on this ... worked OK, now have access to the settings via the cog-wheel. thanks to all who replied

I have the same issue tried the fix above but still cant access the settings.

The above concerned the solution for the official preinstalled OS for the U1 - Android 5 - Lollipop.

Are you on the Beta Android 6 - Marshmallow?

Probably the cause and the solution are not the same and require further observation.

I'm on Android 5

So, what settings are there that you can't access?

You can reach the Advance Settings by pulling down the top notifications bar, double clicking on it twice and clicking once in the notifications drop down menu that appears in the middle of the bar. There you have a little white star or crank like icon to access the Advance Settings.

If you have Minix Metro launcher, you click the clock area and you get to the Advance Settings.

If those are the settings that you can't reach, what happens when you try to access them with each of those methods?

The normal Settings area can be reached by getting into the All Apps Menu and selecting the Settings icon in there. Or, should you have the Minix Metro launcher, by clicking the large star or crank icon that is present in the large squares of the launcher.

If those are the settings that you can't reach, what happens when you try to access them with each of those methods?

It is very unlikely for you to have the same as the above, as the above was caused from a former incompatibility between an update to the Contacts application that was issued by the Playstore and that was corrected in the newer updates to that app.

I also could not understand which solution you tried since there are several solutions proposed above. Did you actually disable the Contacts app and tried it from there?

However some other app or update could have broke it for you. When did you notice that to happen? Is there a milestone you can remember that could have caused that odd situation?

Please let us know in detail what you tried so far as this is not a so common annoyance to be happening these days.

I'll check all above but have to do this tomorrow then I'll update the thread.

Tomorrow or next year, you don't have to reply until you got some actual news! :ROFLMAO:(y)

But in the meantime keep in mind that someone else might come here and have answers or suggestions to resolve your issue, my comment is just my trying and I probably won't have a solution after your answers, it is up to you to accept them or mine or refuse them.

I am sure the next one to come here will tell you straight away to reflash the Minix with the official rom. Which is probably the solution anyway.

Just wait and see...

I am using Metro launcher, I can click on the date and get advanced settings, but when I click on the cog the screen goes blank then comes back to the home screen.

When I click on settings in the all apps menu the same thing happens.

I disabled the contacts app.

Not sure when this started.

That is weird. It is the exact same symptom of the situation described in the title, but instead of having the Contacts app as a reason there seems to be something else...

A few things could still be tried instead of going into the quick and desperate solution of reflashing the box. I always prefer to find what is causing the problem as reflashing will eventually having you getting back to the same loop should you reinstall everything back. Besides, losing all is quite a pain...

What I would do one by one and by this sequence:

- Change the box language to English USA, restart the box, try the Settings. Should they work you can change the language back to what it was.
- Get into Advance Settings, Storage, click Cache to clear it. Try the Settings.
- In Minix Metro click All Tasks Killer, try the Settings, if still no magic, go to Advance Settings, Apps and disable one by one. Don't worry, the ones required by the system will start automatically on next reboot. Take this chance to uninstall or disable the ones you are certain you don't need. 1 - Try the Settings. 2 - Reboot the box and try the Settings.
- If you installed something from outside the Playstore back it up and remove it. Try the Settings then.
- Turn off the U1, press the power button and hold it pressed for aprox. 10 seconds. This gets you to the recovery menu which has an option to Clear Cache. Select it, and once done select Normal Restart. Try the Settings.
- If none of the above produced the required effect you can still try another thing before going into the drastic measures.

@Alexdroid mentioned an app that seems to perform well in repairing Android systems, he mentioned it regarding a U9-H, and I never tried this myself, but since we are getting out of options maybe you can give it a try, read about it here: https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/cleaning-restoration-application.534/

If none of the above works I am really afraid we are left with only two remaining options, and any of them will wipe all your data, so you will need to backup everything you need to keep, data and apps.

1 - Factory reset (brings the box to it's initial condition)
2 - Original Rom flash (should factory reset not resolve it)

Instructions for both of the above can be found here in this forum.

Tried all above, but

"Turn off the U1, press the power button and hold it pressed for aprox. 10 seconds. This gets you to the recovery menu which has an option to Clear Cache. Select it, and once done select Normal Restart. Try the Settings"

This didn't get to the recovery menu.

Make sure the U1 is turned off (not in sleep mode). Keep the HDMI cable connected because you will need the screen. Remove USB drives, except the remote dongle.

Keep the U1 button pressed for aprox. 10 seconds or longer, it might require several tries, as you do you will see the openning Minix Android logo with the Android dummy. Release the button and after 2 or 3 seconds you will get the Recovery Menu which displays the instructions to navigate it in the upper left corner in a few red lines. And the options underneath those lines in blue. The Android Dummy will be present lying down.

The instructions will tell you that you need the volume buttons to navigate the options up and down. The first line is to reboot the box, and the lines bellow concern more drastic measures, so you should act with caution. The line you should select in order to follow what I said above is the one that mentions "wipe cache partition", let it do its thing for a short variable while and when it is done choose the line to reboot the box.

It has to work, but if you never did it you might need to try it several times until you get it done. Don't give up.

Managed to "wipe cache partition" settings still don't work, so its a full factory reset now is it.

Yes, that will do it, but all the apps you installed and everything you added to the box on your own will be deleted, so make sure you don't leave photos, music, or other things you might wish to keep behind because you won't be able to have them back after that procedure.

Thanks for all your help, I'll report back after, not looking forward to this I have a lot of apps and programmes on it.
