Windows update problem at 1809

As long as there is sufficient storage space on your NEO Z83-4/NEO Z83-4 Pro or you connect an external storage device (e.g. USB memory stick) there should be no problem automatically updating to 1809 via the Windows Update option in the settings menu.

A new version of Windows will be released next month. You know?

Hi John, I have tried multiple times since 2017 to get the Minix NEO Z83-4 64 bit system to update to 1809. The last thing I tried was to revert it back to out of the box state today. It proceeded to install some updates but unfortunately did not install 1809. Now I'm reading that Microsoft will no longer support the version I have past April 10th 2019. I've attached a screenshot of my results. Do I need to load an image to make this happen?

Please confirm whether you're able to successfully install the 1809 image that Villa provided a link to.

Howdy all, total noob to this Minix stuff. I've owned the device for over a year and for what I've needed, it's worked great. But, lately it's a serious PITA to update.

Now, I'm no rookie when it comes to "flashing" devices. I've been flashing cooked ROMs on my mobile devices since 2001. But, that matters not when it comes to this device.

So, I'm trying to create this UEFI bootable using the 11-March release and Rufus 3.4.xxxx. First off, following directions provided in the Firmware thread, and using Rufus doesn't offer me an ISO image. Secondly, despite numerous web searches, my Rufus interface doesn't match screen shots of the same version.

My general theory in these situations is: The more frustrating the problem, the more simple the solution.

So, please Minix community please feel free to humiliate/educate me at your first convenience.

Peace,
TNT

There's no need to use Rufus.
Just go to this website and download the firmware (Or Windows 10 OS).
https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/neo-z83-4-windows-10-home-os-image-1809.1007/

Then release/unzip all child files and folders to the root directory of the USB stick.

Then the USB stick is bootable, and the Windows 10 shall be re-installed automatically when you boot from this USB stick.

image-1809.1007 worked perfectly and I'm on release 1809 and getting updates now. Thank you for your help! I have one unrelated question regarding the 64 GB Micro SD memory chip that I inserted in to the Minix Neo Z83-4 system. Where do I see any effects of that extra memory in the OS? It seems to have the same amount of drive space, no extra swap file or RAM and I don't see it as a flash drive. Is there some tweak I need to make to allow the OS to use this extra memory? Thanks

The Micro SD card is for storage.

You can install (or move) apps to it though...

As per not seeing it as a flash drive , some have had issues like this. I'm not sure how this is fixed?!
@MINIX - John may be able to help.

After starting from the key, it stops on the MINIX black screen. What should I do?

What's the issue re 1903 update and 32GB minimum?? As the Z83-4 only has what 30GB(?) it will never be eligible and according to MS: "You're currently running a version of windows [1803] that's nearing the end of support. We recommend you update to the most recent version of Windows 10 now to get the latest features and security improvements." I will have to jump through hoops for 1809 to work (hopefully), and if not, that's it then? The PC becomes effectively redundent?? Surely not...

I just upgraded my Z83-4 to 1903
Appears to be working just fine.
Only problem was an error "couldn't update system reserved partition" but resizing the partition using a free partition manager fixed the problem.
The update took hours and sat at 0% for quite a while.

It is another idea but another thing you can do is using a external usb device (a user in this forum said he used this way) .
I guess windows maybe install temporary files in that (external usb), in my opinion like this its easier to use and we dont need to resize the partition.

It still took an external drive to update the OS. The Partition problem has to be addressed by resizing, its default size is too small for the upgrade.
