Apps Can Only See 1920x1080p at 60hz

Hi all,

I'm baffled, my TV confirms that it is displaying the home screen at 4k but all my android apps (Emby and Kodi) can only see 1920x1080 at 60hz as an option?

That particular setting in Kodi is just for the resolution of Kodi's GUI itself, not the resolution of the actual media you may be viewing ;)!!

If you use an A2 Lite, A3 or another air mouse with a keyboard press "O" while your media is playing in Kodi & it will display the player process info which will include the resolution of the current media.

Hi mate,

Unfortunately I gave up and put in a return as what ever the issue is I don't think anyone will be able to figure it out as I seem to be one of very few who has this issue.

It doesn't matter what settings I tried, automatic resolution on or off it resulted in the same thing, the TV and box was running 2160 but apps will only see 1080 for what ever reason.

I plugged my 4k Fire stick back in, launched emby and.. Display mode 2160/59.94

I'd love to know why I had this issue but I've spent I don't know how many hours trying variations of resolutions, automatic resolution on and off, HDR on and off, changing TV HDMI version, resetting the box and starting a fresh, Emby Beta, checking for software updates, changing HDMI.. Nothing works, but as I say put the fire stick in straight away no messing I get 2160

All android (and T5 with android TV) minix devices (that i tested) have kodi app GUI limited to 1080p and this is not a problem because if you have a 4k file you can watch 4K content (of course you must have a 4K capable TV), without any problem, the same is for SD content.

Minix windows devices (that i tested) have kodi app GUI showing the maximum output of the TV (for example 4K).

I will not talk about Emby because i don´t use it.

Thanks for the clarification, unfortunately while the GUI resolution is locked at 1080p it still did show 1080p when I opened one of the menus while watching a movie in kodi, and side by side with emby movies the display mode was certainly set to 2160 as expected on the Fire tv stick but as usual the minix display mode was stuck to 1080p with no additional display modes available.

I don't undersrand why I'm the only one with the issue though, the Android resolution detects and displays everything in 2160p its just the apps, it's a shame really as I did like the box and it did seem to run my Shadow app okay without any stuttering but the Far Cry 5 game I was running at the time was showing weird resolutions in the settings menu, again it's like the apps cannot get the correct resolutions from the OS.

The OS can get the resolutions from the apps though, (ordinarily at least).

Even the info banner on your TV in the photos you posted reported that the device was sending a 4K signal through to the TV.

I have a 4K TV (albeit passing through a 4K compatible AVR) & my T5 displays media in its original 4K resolution perfectly fine.

Some older 4K TV's (and even some newer ones for that matter) have full capabilities on 1 or 2 of their HDMI inputs, but, for example, HDMI inputs 3 and/or 4 may be limited.

Were you connecting your T5 using the main HDMI input (s) on the TV that were definitely known to support 4K?

Having said that, it still doesn't account for why the TV's info banner reports receiving a 4K signal either.

Did you take any pictures of Kodi's player process info when it was decoding 4K media as well or just of the known GUI restriction, or other apps that themselves may have some restriction with Android TV?

It's still a head scratcher admittedly!! Obviously the device has gone back now so all we can do is wait to see if this is reported again but you're the first on this forum since the device was released as far as I'm aware!!

It's actually still in the kitchen mate, post office isn't open until tomorrow but maybe I'll try and get some good information for you, like a video maybe? But unfortunately I never did get a picture of the kodi details but I do have one of YouTube with stats for nerds open, I'll attach it here.

It was the lack of AFR :(
A lack of what?

Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
I don't think AFR had anything to do with it mate, I disabled auto adjust resolution and left the minix t5 using the 2160 at 60 frames, in Emby I also disabled any auto framerate adjustments as there is a setting for that in Emby.

The problem is, Kodi does not have auto frame rate in this box, so is only displaying 1080p in GUI, the other problem is, without AFR you will see all movies in 2160p@60hz.

There are 2 problems with the missing AFR, movies like "Planet Earth" with a lot of panning stutter a lot @60hz and are completly smooth at @25hz, the other problem is the tv upscalling (at least mine) is amazing, so if I'm playing 1080p or 720p I will want the TV making the upscalling. I only use my box with KODI so what I did was installing COREELEC in a micro sd, and now I'm happy.

What addon did you use in your last image? Is that kodi?

To be honest mate Emby does actually have an automatic refresh rate setting in the settings, but unfortunately no Android app will detect a viewport (YouTube) or display mode (Emby) of anything above 1080p so I'm a step behind even worrying about refresh rates, that might be one thing that would actually work okay if the display modes weren't locked at 1080p lol

The displays mode locked as to be with AFR, and it does not work ok to anyone until they fix it... No one has this working on Neo T5...

What is that codec / buffer / network info on your picture?

Okay mate, well I have a chap setting up the box right now running 2160 resolution, of this is correct he will also confirm his display mode and viewport in YouTube are both 1920x1080

The picture with all those details is YouTube with stats for nerds enabled, the resolution shows its a 4k video but viewport confirms once again its still in 1080p

Wow I think your right! After all the bloody time I spent trying x, y and z my friend is replicating exactly the same thing. Emby display mode is running 1920x1080at60 and no list is being populated allowing us to chose anything beyond.

While I was looking into this issue however I did receive conflicting answers as to what exactly this means..

Does this mean that 4k content is being shown and displayed in 4k, but the apps GUI is shrinking this 4k content into a 1080p window thus degrading the content slightly? There was information regarding this on a Sony TV forum I believe and they was saying the 4k content despite being played in 4k was not displaying in its proper 4k quality (they was saying things like text that is usually clear on the movie wasn't clear) it sort of takes a 4k movie, downscale to 1080p and the up scales as best as it can back to 4k.

I don't know, but Im glad to know it's not just me now.

I don't know mate, but to me, it means this box is not fit to watch Kodi|Media, etc on the current android firmware :( And I think Minix is having some trouble with support cause I sent them an e-mail regarding this problem (fixed >GUI< etc) 2/3 weeks ago and nobody answered me. I was thinking of buying a U22-XJ for my main TV and putting this Neo T5 for my 2nd TV and I end up buying another brand just because of this issue.

In this new brand I have AFR working fine on Android, but my ethernet was only giving me 100mbps when it was supposed to be giving me 1gbps, lol so maybe I will return it (I'm just not sure about the return because I bought from a Chinese reseller and I'm afraid of returning the box and end up without box and money ahah)

Next time I will buy a bigger brand box like Nvidia or something like that, I'm starting to be fed up with these Chinese devices.

Just wanted to say that indeed this box is severely limited without AFR, which is a shame. I hope MINIX at least said something about what they're gonna or not gonna do about it.

Hi mate,

Mines been in an Amazon box on the table awaiting its trip back for a couple of days but in the meantime I've been researching and getting help from others who have recently purchased this box to try to gain some understanding as to what's going on. I just couldn't fathom the fact that my Minix Neo T5 box has 4k slapped all over it yet it can't actually display it..

So, something I've found interesting is something called "MediaCodec Surface" and basically it's a pipeline separate to the rendered GUI that you can display actual media, so in theory you can in Android have a 1920x1080p GUI and then the app can use the mediacodec surface to output 2160. Pretty much likes what's explained here:

https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/and...-1080p-resolution-to-apps/td-p/2251639/page/3

However there are two issues, I've heard one chap say this is possible when your using a TV app on the TV (no external box like we have our minix) which in the above link is specifically in relation to people running apps off their TV

Second issue is, these other chaps who used stats for nerds on a YouTube video would still have their viewport showing as 1920x1080*2 or 2160 but my viewport didn't have the x2 so I'm not sure what to conclude yet.

I wish someone from minix would just out this to rest haha..

I have read through this thread and to be honest I cant actually work out what your saying your problem is
I dont use emby so cant help you there but i do use kodi extensively
can you upload a sample test file somewhere with which you are having issues
