Apps Can Only See 1920x1080p at 60hz

Hi mate,

Mines been in an Amazon box on the table awaiting its trip back for a couple of days but in the meantime I've been researching and getting help from others who have recently purchased this box to try to gain some understanding as to what's going on. I just couldn't fathom the fact that my Minix Neo T5 box has 4k slapped all over it yet it can't actually display it..

So, something I've found interesting is something called "MediaCodec Surface" and basically it's a pipeline separate to the rendered GUI that you can display actual media, so in theory you can in Android have a 1920x1080p GUI and then the app can use the mediacodec surface to output 2160. Pretty much likes what's explained here:

https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/and...-1080p-resolution-to-apps/td-p/2251639/page/3

However there are two issues, I've heard one chap say this is possible when your using a TV app on the TV (no external box like we have our minix) which in the above link is specifically in relation to people running apps off their TV

Second issue is, these other chaps who used stats for nerds on a YouTube video would still have their viewport showing as 1920x1080*2 or 2160 but my viewport didn't have the x2 so I'm not sure what to conclude yet.

I wish someone from minix would just out this to rest haha..

Trouble is, there's nothing to "out", at least not about this issue you're experiencing. The T5 hasn't been without its issues but most are already very well known.

My TV, as previously stated, successfully streams my local 4K content using Kodi without any problems!!

Are you 100% certain the source content is in fact 4K?

What's your make & model of TV? (It could be an HDMI handshake issue specific to your TV.)

It's a crap TV mate, but if you check my screenshots this source is 100000% 4k and my Fire stick 4k displays every single "stats for nerds" and video information with the information I'd expect.

Minix Neo T5:

Emby - Display Mode 1080/60
Youtube - Viewport 1920 x 1080

Fire stick:
Emby - Display Mode 2160/59.94
Youtube - Viewport 1920x1080*2.00

Theres only one variable here and that's the devices, I took the minix neo t5 out the box about 20 minutes ago and I'm now switching these devices on HDMI 1 and I go one to the other. That minix is not doing what the fire stick is doing, and take a look at the collage photo I created, Dr Dolittle in 4k which is 2 mins and 32 seconds in, paused on both devices and I don't know why but the fire stick almost looks like its got HDR on. I tried to replicate that colour by turning HDR settings off and on in the Minix T5 TV settings but it makes no difference at all.

All in all, I can't really do much more mate. The fire stick runs everything at 2160, it looks better judging from the pause I did I just can't justify keeping it. I'm all open to here any suggestions by all means and I don't want to talk down on Minix either but side by side I'd have to pick the 4k stick.

There is a way to tell what you are seeing beyond what the app tells you. Your TV should also provide you some info. I also don't use Emby. And in spite my eyes noticing quite well by comparison between 1080p and 4k, you really can't miss it 1mt away from a large screen, there is something beyond question:

When you put an HDR file to play, your TV will inform you the content is 4k HDR, do you think the TV would display that info in the content was 1080p as you claim?

Also:
Instead of using Youtube app in Android (never managed to find a way to select 4k playing in there), I use two ways of watching 4k content in Youtube: An app called Smart Youtube TV, or simply the Youtube.com website in desktop mode of Chrome, both will allow you to select all possible range of resolutions up to 4k in 4k content, and you can see for yourself.

I don't know what that Viewport is, but Kodi 18.6 apparently doesn't have it anymore. I am convinced that information can be related to whether the decoding of the file is done by hardware or by software, and being erroneous if read by the wrong device that is was intended to apply to. But someone might well make it more clear for you.

I wish there was a way to read 4k files in 1080p devices without a complex and time consuming process of bringing the resolution down, as I could retrieve my legacy machines from the grave...

The reason I was taking still pictures of a movie was to actually see if there was any details lost between the minix reporting a 1920x1080 display mode/viewport but before I even checked I immediately realised the washed out colours on the minix, I then decided to focus on that for a minute by changing TV settings on the minix like HDR on and off, colour settings etc but realised nothing would work.

My TV doesn't state whether it is playing HDR or not, it does have a HDR setting on the picture options but me and a few others think it's a gimmick because I've never actually switched the HDR mode and visually seen anything change, this is why I said that in comparison, the fire stick paused image "looks" like what I'd imagine HDR to be like.. The colours are vibrant and pop which is what I've heard HDR does.

Furthermore, the stock YouTube app allows you to chose a 4k resolution, just select the dots on the left hand side and you will see quality, from there you can also enable stats for nerds. Its stats for nerds that confirm the optimal and current resolution is playing 2160p but again the "viewport" is 1920x1080 which is consistent with the findings in Emby and Kodi, they are running 4k but state the "Display mode" is 1920x1080.

Now the issue I have is, I don't 100% know whether display mode and viewport mean the GUI is seporately being rendered In 1920x1080 and somehow displaying proper 4k content OR is the 4k content being shrunk into a 1920x1080 screen space thus looking better than 1920x1080 but not quite retaining all of those finer details.

Furthermore, Why?.. Why is this Minix the only box doing this? Fire tv, nvidia shield they all without a doubt do exactly what you would expect, open any app and look at the stats and you'll either see as I've already shown a viewport of 1920x1080*2.00 or a display mode of 2160, why? Well because that's what it should be, If your playing 4k why would the display mode and viewport be anything other than 2160 or 1080*2.00? It makes no sense, no sense at all.

And as for playing 4k on 1080p resolution to bring your legacy machines from the grave, do it.. Nothings going to pop up on the screen and say "nope, your not watching that" all that will happen is the 2160 will be shrunk down and you won't see the finer 4k details as this chap explains on the second post with his shield connected to a 1080p TV which direct plays 4k content but shrinks it down.

It's that very example that I'm trying to explain that may be happening here on the minix, is the 4k content being downscaled to the reported 1920x1080 viewport/display mode.

The video will be rendered at 4k despite the GUI being 1080p:

Testing on the stock Youtube app with this video:

My T5 shows Viewport 1920x1080:

My Shield TV Pro 2019 also shows Viewport 1920x1080:
Shield.png

So just to update on this I ended up returning and getting a shield 2017. I again seen viewports of 1920x1080 and I think the short and sweet of all of this is explained by "Media Codec Surface"

The 4k colours on Emby and Plex where washed out on the shield just like the minix. This is a known issue and I think this is to do with HDR to SDR conversion, I managed to get a massive improvement by:

Changing the display mode from

RGB 8-bit Rec. 709 to

YUV 420 10-Bit Rec. 709

I also disabled "match content colour space"

the final step was adjusting (on the TV itself) colour, saturation, brightness etc to match the colours even better. I used a screenshot taken from my 4k stick and got them very close of not slightly better.

So the Minix Neo T5 to be honest was a brilliant box for the price I paid but at the time I had no idea that any of this was normal, and nobody could really explain why the minix was showing different to 4k stick. But apart from the shield, I'd definitely say the minix neo t5 would the best box. :D
