Audio Output from Mini Displayport

I recently purchased a "Cable Matters Active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (Active Mini DP to HDMI) Supporting Eyefinity Technology & 4K Resolution" which was the recommended adapter for the Z83-4 to overcome some audio problems I have been having. The output goes through a Pioneer XS330 AVR capable of handling all audio and video formats to 7.1.

After connecting the above I noticed that my FX speakers were no longer outputting surround sound. Looking at the speaker configuration I noticed it was set for sterio 2 channel and both 5.1 and 7.1 were grayed out and could not be selected. I swopped the adapter back to HMDI and the configuration again allowed me to select 51. or 7.1.

The features of this adopter clearly show - "Transmits both audio and video from computer or tablet to HDTV display; Supports video resolutions up to 3840x2160 (Ultra HD) at 60 Hz and flawless audio pass-thru for uncompressed digital 7.1, 5.1 or 2 channels".

Based on this it would appear as though the Z83-4 DP does NOT output more than 2 channels through this port. Unless there is a setting I am supposed to make, if so, what is it???

Only the HDMI port supports 5.1 and 7.1 audio.

Many thanks for the reply and confirmation John.

Just so I am completely clear on this, if I connect the Z83 to my AVR and have selected 'Audio Pass-through' in kodi, the DP will only ever pass 2 channels (left & right) to the AVR?

The reason I am confused over this is due to the reference in the Kodi Wiki covering this topic that states - "2.0 channels should be selected when using Pass-through as the audio information will be decoded in the external AVR to how ever many channels have been selected there."

Does that mean that if using the DP this 'extra' audio information is stripped out, or simply not passed on for decoding? You can see why I'm confused here as the information on the Display port adapter clearly states - ".... flawless audio pass-thru for uncompressed digital 7.1, 5.1 or 2 channels".

What am I missing here?

I dont think you shouldnt really need to use the adaptor to overcome your audio issues.

Have you read through all the information provided in Kodi's wiki guides
https://kodi.wiki/view/Windows_audio
https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/System/Audio
https://kodi.wiki/view/Audio_quickstart_guide

especially the info regading configuring your windows sound settings and in Kodi using the WASAPI drivers.

I agree it can all be a bit confusing

Please also confirm your AVR....I couldnt find any info an a Pioneer XS330

Hi pusb87,

In order of questions -
I tried the adapter for 2 reasons. First, since updating to 18.0 (now 18.1) I can no longer view 4k videos. The sound a picture jump all over the place due to the CPU maxing out 100%. Before the update I could view them with no real problems. Second, according to the specs I read the DP (1.2) outputs almost twice the bandwidth of HDMI (1.4). I thought this might help both my sound and video issues.

Yes I have read all the above wiki's several times. One of the issues here is that not all of these have been updated yet to v18.0, also, some of the settings they recommend do not work on my setup. For instance I can only get 'stable' audio if I select 'Fixed' in the Pass-through section and turn 'Adjust frame Rate' off. This is different to what is suggested in the wiki.

My apologies for the Pioneer model it is the VSX 330.

I can't understand why I can no longer get 4k through the Z83-4 with full 5.1 when I used to before the update? It is almost certainly a CPU issue, but what has changed?

The simple solution is to go back to Kodi 17.6 where you had no issues.

You dont say what version of windows you are using but i would suggest keeping to 1803 for now as well as 1809 has its own set of issues.

I tried Kodi 18.1 on my N42 minix ( and Windows 1809 ) but have gone back to 17.6 and 1803 as in my view both are more stable and less problematic. Unless you have a good reason to there is no need to constantly update !!

I definetly have best match and adjust frame rate on in Kodi.
