Chrome n ES Explorer install natively

Hi

any idea how can i install this two apps natively under the apps category without using side launcher or any other similar app?

I certainly want the options here; I got the T5 because it had a fairly up to date version of Android so I figured it would run everything. Especially Google apps since it's "Google Certified".

However, I can't get Gmail! I can't even install something as basic as Chrome to open Gmail in a the browser! No Netflix! No ES explorer... I have searched for half a dozen differnt apps and none of them show up in Play Store!

My old Minix, I think is called an X8H+ or something like that, runs all this stuff no problem so it's quite ridiculous that it's all now missing in a new version.

1- Sideload launcher
Does this just mean enabling unknown sources and installing the apk? Isn't it just going to say the apk isn't compatible?

How can I get the apk from Play Store for say ES Explorer without trusting some third party website to host a (hopefully unaltered) copy of it?

2- atvlauncher seems helpful but if I have to sideload can't I have Nova Launcher or some such like and forget this step?

3- probably some ways above my level of expertise but is there an easy way? Or are we talking recompiling code?

Many thanks

The Neo T5 has a more recent version of the "Android TV OS" rather than pure Android, (such as your old X8-H Plus). It's also a Google certified device because it has the ATV OS. Google don't certify the pure Android media hubs.

As you've become aware since purchasing the T5, there is a stark contrast between the interface, functionality & the availability of apps between the two different OS's. (Obviously the apps available for the ATV OS are designed to work with a much more basic "TV style" remote which is why browsers & email clients aren't included. It's not that they're "missing" per se.)

There are sites with clean APK's available for many popular apps, some are paid. Just Google for info :).
