Dolby Vision

I did try your 2 files, they play fine but I'm a bit confused about it.
On VLC / MX Player, the render is pretty good. However if I disable Dobly Vision on the box, the render is still good.
On my TV's native player, your 2 files will not be recognised as Dolby Vision, my own testing file will.

If you enable Dolby Vision in the menu does not mean that the box correctly playing Dolby Vision.

If I enable Dolby Vision in the menu the whole box will output Dolby Vision (even when not playing a video, when browsing the menus for example the TV still says it receives Dolby Vision). If I disable it, your file still plays well (and the TV says it receives HDR) so yes the box can decode these files with no problem. But does it sends the proper Dolby Vision information when reading these or simply the static HDR data? I can't tell as turning on Dolby Vision on the box makes the whole system output Dolby Vision, but disabling it gives me the same quality output on your file (except that the TV will flag HDR instead of Dolby Vision).

@skornjr
Yes, they works fine because if you disable Dolby Vision your U22 send SDR signal to your TV so it's normal.
And yes the two files won't play on TV media player, I have the same thing.

Are you sure that even file Joker_dvhe.07.06_Double_Track_Double_Layer.mp4 play in Dolby Vision on your TV ?

I m a bit confused here, usually HDR files sent as SDR will have washed out colours, your file's colours looked fine to me even when disabling Dolby Vision.

Joker_dvhe.07.06_Double_Track_Double_Layer.mp4 plays Dolby Vision as well. But here as I said, turning on Dolby Vision on the system makes the whole output 'Dolby Vision'. Once in that mode, even when playing a SDR file, the TV will show the "dolby vision" indicator as Android is sending some Dolby Vision flag in the main output signal. It doesn't necessarily mean that the Dolby Vision files are decoded properly as they should. Sorry if I'm not really clear, I'm not sure on how to explain it properly.

hey, thanks for testing! usually, like in the case of uhd bd players, turning off auto dolby vision so that there's not a constant psuedo output to the tv should make it so only when a file is in DV will it play as such and otherwise be in hdr10 / sdr respectively. if having it set to off flags no dv on dv files, then it leads me to think the box can't properly decode dv.

You're welcome. Yeah the Dolby Vision setting seems to be all or nothing. I have to disable it if I don't want the pseudo output on the TV, but once disabled, it won't re enable itself if I play a DV file. The TV will just register HDR(PQ) as the input signal.

Perfectly clear, same thing is happening to me except it is with HDR10+, I don't have a DV compatible TV so can't comment but once I have played a HDR10+ video the TV (Samsung 65Q70R) remains triggered on HDR10+ until reboot. Ideally a passthrough system to allow the TV to natively handle the video signal is what we need. Clearly these are issues Minix need to address.

That's exactly what it needs. Here's hoping it can be added via firmware.
I hope it can. I upgraded from the amazing U9H because the U22 is advertised as DV / HDR10+ capable. So if that capability at the end of the day is limited to the display of the right logo on the TV without actually processing the files, it would be a pretty sad story.

I'm afraid that is likely the case man

I managed to play a DV file from VLC, however the colours are completely messed up. There is a green tint over the video and all the colours seem to go from green to some kind of dark pink / purple. Same file on my TV's player renders perfectly. Not sure if that's a VLC issue tho

Now that's interesting, re the color shifts, as I encountered a couple of Dr Who (season 12) files last night that did exactly that (CoreElec 9.2.2 Kodi 18.6). I was thinking there was a problem with the files and I would have to redownload them. I know they were normal colors on my computer when I checked them after the original download.

Is there something I can look for in MediaInfo or..... (suggestions please), that would confirm it is a Dolby Video file?

EDIT: Ok, I finished reading the thread and saw the MediaInfo listing and with the Dolby Video HDR entry.

welp, I'm officially unfollowing this and bidding Minix adieu. no official response after months of asking and waiting is abundantly obvious. dolby vision is nothing more than a marketing farce to sell more boxes under false pretenses. what a shame. the Ugoos AM6 Plus is the same box but with real dolby vision support and has devs working tirelessly to cater to customer needs. you can close this thread now, goodbye!

I do have some sympathy for your current feelings about the lack of aknowledgement or responses of the SDR/HDR/DV issues surrounding the U22 from official MInix in this and the bugtracker threads.

However I guess you will not see this now as you have thrown your toys out of the pram.

@MINIX - John @MINIX – Martin can you please chime in for the rest of us please:)

thanks

I do totally understand his frustration. For me Dolby Vision and hd audio are the most important features for me to buy this box. For some time now there has been asked several times about the support of Dolby vision. What profiles are supported. Or we get ignored or nobody from Minix doesn't know the answer. Then it seems to me like a marketing stunt as well. I wouldn't care if something isn't working right away out of the box but it would be great to get some information or answers. Unfortunately that's not happening.

My apologies.
We also found the Dolby Vision problem, the color doesn't seem to be good, and have been contacting with Amlogic.
This month, Amlogic will release another SDK version, and then we'll test.
We plan to release another version at the end of this month, so the Dolby Vision problem could be resolved then.

What Dolby Vision profiles does this box support, why is this so hard for someone to answer?

I tested Dolby Vision with 005 fw with MoviePlayer:

Profile 5 Single Layer works! (mp4 and ts)
Profile 7 Double Layer works! (mp4, in ts not tested)
DV in mkv not works (playback in HDR).

With Kodi 19 alpha, only the Profile 5 Single Layer works.

Great work Minix! Please support DV in mkv and AFR too!

"No, not in English, I can't. Delete my posts and don't write anything more. Help yourself or whatever".

Why the immediate defensive posture & ultimatum given over a problem that's certainly not impossible to solve @BernyBerny ?

If other forum members can respect the forum rules & use a translation app as required subjectively, there's really no reason why you "can't" as well, & still remain part of the community :)!! What's more, everyone else is (obviously) posting on this forum in English anyway, which you've either understood just fine unaided so far or you're already using a translation app/tool to translate anything in English over to German! (In so doing, you've already proven from this that you "can" use a translator even if you can't directly understand English :)!!)

Ultimately, it helps nobody at all, least of all you, to delete your posts or possibly your membership account but why even let the situation head down that route in the first place? You obviously created your forum membership to begin with either to ask for help/support with something or to contribute!! And you want your posts all deleted & to be removed for what? (The few seconds it takes to copy/paste some text to/from a basic translation tool.)

The use of a translator so that you can post on the forum in English isn't going to suddenly reduce your life expectancy by half, is it?!?!? ;). This is hardly a problem that can't be solved if you use a variety of tools/aids available to you from multiple sources online etc.

(Unless of course the root problem is you actually "won't" post in English rather than you "can't"? In which case,q A) Say that, & B) Impasse reached, but even so, you just need to stop posting in German.)

Entirely up to you if you'd like to change your mind ;)!
