Ethernet/Lan connection keeps dropping

Hi, recently updated to lollipop, I turn off WiFi, connect the Lan cable, open a browser, web page loads(say BBC.com) then I click on a link and browser says I'm not connected. I have a bt smart hub.

Any suggestions on why this happens and are there anythings I can do to investigate further?

Thanks

Have you tried simply rebooting your smart hub since the update?

Just rebooted the hub and minix box and still the same behaviour. I going to try the static ip way, but I do not know what dns1 2 etc means. Trying to work it out via Google.

The primary DNS will be the IP address of your smart hub. Typically it's 192.168.1.1. No need to enter the secondary DNS under normal circumstances.

A static IP might work, you'll have to try it & see.

Keep us posted :).

Thanks for the guidance re static ip.

I've determined the issue.

The smart hub goes to a Netgear router. A cable then goes from the router to the minix. I disconnected the cable going from smart hub to the router and put it straight into the minix. It started working both dhcp and static.

I use the Netgear router to connect a sky box, bt box, a NAS and the minix. All the devices still work, it's just the minix not working since the lollipop upgrade as everything worked on KitKat.

I will look into a different router, unless this is a known issue?

Anyone recommend a router?

Thanks for the speedy help Arctic Wolf.

You're welcome :).

Network issues are frequently caused by an iffy cable, connection, setup or sometimes they just need a reboot.

OK, so from that description are you essentially using the smart hub as a modem only & then continuing to use the Netgear as a router otherwise? Or some other arrangement? You're basically using 2 routers!!

Obviously, the smart hub is a router too. They have improved somewhat but they're still nowhere near as good as many 3rd party routers. If you're doing things that way because you're short on ethernet ports, you could just buy a simple Netgear unmanaged network switch. They're pretty cheap these days.

Otherwise, I'm also with BT (VDSL). I can't stand their home hubs/smart hubs so I use an Asus DSL-AC68U modem/router with both managed & unmanaged Netgear network switches for additional ethernet ports. The DSL-AC68U's are a little pricy but they're one of a handful of modem/routers guaranteed to work with BT. What's more, they're packed with excellent features too, however, they can still be as simple as you need them to be as well. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one :).

Asus also do cable variants as well if you're on fibre, a quick Google search will find them too :).

Thanks again for the advice. The reason I use the Netgear is because the Smart Hub is on the other side of the room(next to phone socket), so a cable runs around the room under the carpet to the TV and all the devices I listed previously.

I'll try a new cable to see that makes a difference and disconnect the other devices from the Netgear to see if it helps.

Happy to use WiFi with the Minix if I can't get anything to work.

Cheers

OK, if you're going to exchange the cable running round the room anyway you could replace it with a longer DSL cable & move the smart hub over to where the TV/devices are ;).

If not possible due to WiFi signal loss or other issues etc, you may be better off with a simple 5 or 8 port switch than the second router. (Yes, the update may be part of the problem but using 2 routers together can over complicate matters & cause Network issues. It can be tricky to set them both up exactly as required as well). Netgear's 5 or 8 port managed switches are also very good if you feel you'd like the extra control etc., price not too much more. ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002YPJ8KM/ref=twister_B00T4DK4LE?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ).

I use both types of switch & I've set several up for others, they're very good. Use ethernet where practical/possible for best results. If still completely stuck, WiFi it'll have to be.

Hope you're sorted soon :).
