External drive for the U1

I want to use an external drive with the U1 but will just a regular WD drive work? I have some older ones and newer ones. Or do you need some kind of powered external?
 
I have used various 2.5 inch, single platter, 5,400rpm hard drive in an unpowered external enclosure. Multiple platter 2.5 inch and any 3.5 inch drives will need powered external enclosures.
