How to install CoreELEC on the U22-XJ

Just to clarify a little further.

Install to internal eMMC: This is the physical storage of the U22 where Android resides, if you were to choose to install CoreELEC on this storage then it shares the internal storage alongside Android, hence you are warned that if you update your U22 Android firmware via FOTA you lose your CoreELEC installation, it will be wiped so you would have to reinstall CoreELEC from scratch onto the eMMC.

Install on USB storage: If you install CoreELEC on a USB memory stick then you have nothing to fear after an Android update as your installation of CoreELEC remains untouched and available for your viewing pleasure.

Install on SD Card: This is not an option yet but hopefully will be in a future firmware update. @MINIX - John ;)

Thank you so much for taking the time to clarify. I will wait for the SD option.
Speaking of SD... How fast is the SD reader on the U22? (is it a waste of money to invest in super fast microsd?)

We aim to include SD Card support in subsequent OTA firmware update for NEO U22-XJ.

Just worth noting that UHS is not implemented for SD on the U22-XJ and as such it is limited to 20MB/s.

We have seen 70MB/s+ when UHS is implemented for SD, 100MB/s+ on the internal eMMC, 250MB/s+ via USB (Sandisk Extreme Pro).

The only time you would feel the speed difference is when updating and the initial bootup, depending on your usage though you are unlikely to notice much difference.

Is this an hardware limitation? If so I think you suggest to install CoreELEC on USB Drive, isn't it?
If you just need Kodi then a good solution is to install CoreElec on main memory, it's really faster.

This much is true but I would not suggest it for now as I forsee quite a few updates coming our way and installing on eMMC does come with a warning:
(WARNING: If you do a dual boot installation on eMMC then do not accept any future OTA or you will lose your CoreELEC install).

Usually I do not install on main memory because sometimes I can get to go back to Android to upgrade firmware in a fast and easy way, or just to use it.

I think if it's too much slow the main way to go is by usb drive.

This is a quick how to for installing CoreELEC onto the Minix NEO U22-XJ.

This guide applies to Windows users only, if you need further support then please make a post at the CoreELEC forums as you will receive help much quicker. Booting currently works on the U22-XJ via USB flash drives only.
  1. Goto the CoreELEC Download page here.
  2. Select Stable>New Installation>Minix NEO U22-XJ and press Download Image.
  3. Use Rufus or Etcher or any other similar utility to burn the downloaded image to a USB flash drive.
  4. Open the flash drive and copy the file X:/device_trees/g12b_s922x_minix_u22xj.dtb to X:/dtb.img
  5. Insert the flash drive into your U22-XJ and press the recovery button next to the WiFi antenna with a small paper clip or pin and press the power button, you must keep the reset button held until you see the CoreELEC screen and this is only necessary for the very first time you boot CoreELEC.
This completes the quick how to.

NOTES:
Remote control configuration:
If you plan to use the Minix remote or the A2/A3 remotes then save the following file here on the root of your flash drive as X:/remote.conf.

Ethernet not working:
There is an issue with the 9.2.2 release dtb, use the following one here.

Install to internal eMMC:
If you wish to install CoreELEC to the internal eMMC, then you will need to enable SSH and connect to your device and enter `ceemmc -x`, the default username and password is root/coreelec (WARNING: If you do a dual boot installation on eMMC then do not accept any future OTA or you will lose your CoreELEC install).

Sleep/Wakeup not working:
If you wish to use Sleep/Wakeup functions then you must do BL301 injection, to do this go-to Add-ons>CoreELEC Configuration>Hardware>Inject BL301 Blob and press OK>Continue then select IR Remote Power Code>Minix.

So now Coreelec is supported I am interested to upgrade from the u9.

Is there someone that upgraded from the u9 to u22-xj and use Coreelec booting from USB ?
Is the speed difference worth the upgrade?

The u9 can still play everything I need.
but for some addons in Coreelec and some apps in Android it could be faster.

But I am not sure yet it is worth the update

Speed is very relative, especially if you have a build and outdated addons.

I have installed CoreELEC on an oldish USB2.0 stick and using it on my U22 with a very slimline Kodi setup and it works extermely well and is just as responsive, if not slightly more, than the same setup on the U9 using android.

So what did you mean?
I will not notice a big speed difference with the u9 in daliy use ?

When i use the same kodi setup on a windows pc the addons works a lot faster than on the u9.
I now a pc setup is total difference.. but I was hoping that the u22 Wil work a lot faster than the u9 (booting, loading addons, Playlist loading..) if the speed difference is not that big it is not worth the update maybe (it is not a cheap boxx)

I meant what i said "is just as responsive, if not slightly more, "

You can look at benchmark numbers all day but they rarely reflect true life use, especially where Kodi is concerned as much of the time taken in Kodi is in talking back and forth to the internet/local network to recieve info or stream.

By all means stick to your U9 if your happy with it.

I would say that the U22 is quicker but whether there is a BIG difference is subjective.
You will only ever find out by trying in your own case scenarios.

Other than potential speed and storage improvements I do not see the U22 offers anything significantly more than the U9 at the moment, so if I were you I would watch this space:cool:

Had the same errors a few times with a SanDisk USB 3 drive.
For whatever reason that I can't explain, the only successful CoreELEC installation I had was when using the USB C port from the u22 (with an adapter).
Tried the other USB slots with that same drive and had the same error you have each time (I'm on the latest FW meaning all the usb ports should be bootable)

been looking around for info and the information on this page has solved it for me...>>>> https://superuser.com/questions/119...tion-folder-in-windows-10-for/1199824#1199824

now boots into coreELEC OK

cant say it seems any faster though

I have succesfully installed CoreELEC using an old USB 2 drive and it woks fine,

I wanted to try on a USB 3 drive so i purchased one. ( SanDisk Ultra 16 GB USB Flash Drive USB 3.0 Up to 130 MB/s Read )

For the life of me I cannot get it to install at all. I get this message > > error in mount_sysroot. mount_common. Could not mount /flash/SYSTEM ***

any ideas anyone ??

It's looking like a SanDisk issue!

CoreELEC boots fine using a Transcend 16GB JetFlash 700 Super Speed USB 3.1 Drive.

yes, and on my old Kingston USB 2 drive ( DT101 G2 16GB)

maybe just one of those things that defies explanation, but my SanDisk USB 3 is working now !!

All I can say is that I made sure the flash drive was completely clean.

Thanks to my local store I can try the u22 for 30 days before I decide to keep it our not ?
I have to say the speed difference is big..
Think I keep it ?
