How to install CoreELEC on the U22-XJ

Thanks to my local store I can try the u22 for 30 days before I decide to keep it our not ?
I have to say the speed difference is big..
Think I keep it ?
I am certainly finding the U22 a powerhouse and with the Minix track record on firmware updates I have no doubt this will be a very much sought after unit.

Hi Guys, I spent the weekend trying to install coreELEC on my U22 without any success :( I've updated the box to last FW, dowloaded the coreELEC v9.2.2 and followed the procedure in the first page. This is what I've done:

- prepared the USB stick (Verbatim 16GB USB2) with Rufus v3.10
- plugged the USB stick in the last USB slot of the box (the one closest to the USB-C port)
- pressed the restore button + power and kept pressed the restore button till coreELEC screen appears

Now I see that coreELEC create the second partition and waiting for the automatic reboot. I reach the reboot countdown from 15s to 0 but then nothing happen. The reboot doesn't kick in and the only way to recover the unit is to unplug the power cable. Rebooting the unit, it found a corrupted filesystem in the second partition so, after 2 mins, starts an automatic filesystem check and repair. After another reboot, the coreELEC splashscreen appears but it remains stuck at that and I have to unplug the power cable to restore the unit. Even changing USB port and perform new process every time produce same result.

I tried with several USB stick with same result. The only way to have the partitioning process work (no reboot stuck) was to plug the USB stick into the USB-C port but after the reboot the second partition has not been seen attached to that port and moving the USB stick into another USB port results again in a stuck of the boot to the coreELEC splashscreen.

Any idea on how to get rid of that?

Like quite a few of us you have the same issues and frustrating hours on installing CoreELEC.

It appears to be simply down to choice ( or maybe luck) of the USB Thumb Drive for no obvious or apparent reason.

Transcend 16GB JetFlash 700 Super Speed USB 3.1 Drive has been known to be succesful , but i give no guarantee :cautious:

Well, if I have to look for the positive in this situation, I'm not the dumb I was suspecting to be :D
I'll try to fetch other USB drives all over the house to try if I'm lucky, otherwise I'll invest in a brand new Trascend.....

Thx for the feedback

I was the lucky one that had the Transcend 16GB JetFlash 700 Super Speed USB 3.1 Drive at hand when I tried CoreELEC for the very first time! (y)

Then I tried a SanDisk Cruzer 32GB and tried several times to no avail. (n)

Did it work for you?

This is an issue only with U22 or even with U1 and U9? IMHO should be placed a remark in the first page post with this advertisement

I never bought it in the end as I got it working on an old USB 2 drive i had. And it works well !!

Kingston DT101 G2 16GB >>> could be added to the short list of working drives

I succeed to load the coreELEC starting page with a really old Kingston DataTraveler 4GB.

The sad thing is that it took 5 minutes to start up
Don't celebrate too quick, one of my old USB thumb drives installed fine but would not survive a reboot, so test that out first before wasting more time configuring everything for nothing

Well, I didn't start to configure it because for me its unacceptable to wait 5 min to start the box. Anyway, it sounds it survived to the reboot, so I'm planning to buy a brand new Kingston DataTraveler USB Stick and retry the process

I am happy to report with a manual upgrade of the U22 firmware to V004 (here) and a new install of CoreELEC 9.2.3 (here) booting from SD Card is now working (y)

Marty, are you aware about any kind of "limitation" for SD Cards as we faced for USB Stick? I mean for SD Brands

Unfortunately there are just way to many brands and models of USB drives, and uSD cards for either MINIX's or CoreELEC's developers to have tried them all in advance.

One of the CoreELEC developers has been working with MINIX in regards to various boot issues. So if there is any remaining issues they will eventually get solved.

I'm going to have a try at installing CoreELEC tomorrow but step 4 from post 1 confuses me.
"4 Open the flash drive and copy the file X:/device_trees/g12b_s922x_minix_u22xj.dtb to X:/dtb.img"
I don't know how to do this

Once you have burnt the CoreELEC image there will be a folder visible on the drive called "device_trees", look in there for a file named "g12b_s922x_minix_u22xj.dtb", right click and rename it to dtb.img

Then cut and paste it into the main section of CoreELEC on your drive:
