I did the unthinkable... Slept with the ennemy.

I like Android because it's an open platform that gives a lot of control over your device.
Apple people keep raving about their i-whaterver. There are many great things about Apple products. Although I had never owned one. I was still b!tching about it.

So I decided last year to actually own one. I bought an iPhone 10 to give it a try. Besides the amazing quality of the camera and the basic phone features... I totally hate iOS, can't wait to go back to Android when my company offers me an upgrade.

Why this introduction? I like my U22 (with its pros and cons) and wanted another box. After a long debate, I decided to buy a NVIDIA Shield Pro. This is not a review of a competitor product. I just want to share my experience of having both to help people making up their minds and save money.

The U22 comes with pure Android, the Shield comes with AndroidTV... The difference by itself gave me a similar shock to when I switched from Android to iOS. AndroidTV is much less permissive. Except for Kodi, I couldn't find any of my goodies on Google Play. I had to sideload pretty much everything including a browser.

If you're not technical and your Box will only run Netflix, Amazon Prime videos and Kodi... Well, the AndroidTV Shield is blistering fast and licensed to play HD content.

If you want versatility, easy access over low-level functions and the freedom to do whatever you want. Stick to the U22. Apparently, it can also be done with a Shield. But unless you already have the knowledge, be prepared to read until your eyes bleed and let the trial and error starts... Maybe you'll get lucky and will not brick your Shield :)

The Ooomf of 4K Netflix and Amazon Prime wears off pretty quick. If I had known this before I would have probably bought another U22 instead of the Shield.

And now we have also U22-XJ custom ROMS, which means more choice for the user.
I am already using ATV Slimbox OS firmware :)

I thought the text was long enough so I chose not to enter in too much details but you are absolutely right. Custom roms certainly fits the "freedom to do whatever you want". To be fair, some daring folks are also running custom roms on the Shield.
