Is Kodi actually playing my content in 4K?

I've recently been wondering something; in the Kodi settings, I can only select 1920x1080. Now, I've read that this only concerns the UI, and that 4K content will still be displayed in actual 4K.

However, on the Kodi wiki I see that by pressing Z, I can see the display info for the current file. The second line of the resulting output shows information about sizing. This is the example the wiki gives:

"Information about the output display of the video stream(720,576)->(1920,1080) = (Resolution of video)->(Output resolution) Reveals any upscaling or downscaling. The example shows upscaling by Kodi and your TV may further upscale. eg in this example a 4K TV will upscale from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160."

Now, for me, when I press Z while playing a 4K file, it says (3840, 2160) -> (1920, 1080). So this seems to indicate that it is not playing in native 4K, but is downscaling to 1080p? Is this correct? If so, how do I fix this?

I am running the original Android 6 008FW. Also, I do have the resolution set to 4K in the Android system settings, so that's not the issue

I would suggest that you follow the next thread to install the correct version of CoreELLEC to a pendrive. It will keep your Android OS untouched and will make the Minix box a dual boot device to use with Kodi. Kodi will perform exactly as expected in CoreELLEC. I hope that helps.

Thank you, but CoreELEC 9.2.8 seems to be the latest available version, which I think still runs Kodi 19, which is quite old at this point and doesn't support all addons I use. LibreELEC actually restarted support for boxes with AMLogic S912 processors (which is what the U9-H has) recently, but for some reason I could not get it running from microSD, only from USB, which is quite slow due to the USB 2.0 ports (see my thread on LibreELEC about this). I might revisit this issue though, and see if I can maybe get it working still.

In the meantime though, I did find this post on the Kodi forum describing my issue. It seems to be a general thing in Kodi for Android 12 and below, where 4K videos are actually displayed in proper 4K, but Kodi reports it as being shown in 1080p. This 1080p resolution only refers to the GUI layer, not the video layer of the screen. So, 4K content should be displayed properly regardless of what Kodi is reporting when pressing the Z key.
