Is there any way to change a BIOS setting programmatically?

I know it's easy to press F11 on boot and enter the BIOS and change settings; then F4 to save.
But is it possible to change BIOS settings by software, while the operating system is running?

BIOS is the old name.
UEFI is the new name.
Both have the same function.
They are very similar.
