J50C-4 fan is constantly running fast

Hi,
I purchased a J50C-4 a while ago and it worked fine for several months. There was then a period in which I didn't use it much, but now I've started using it again and the fan seems to constantly run at high speed. It's noticeably loud (I can hear it from across the room and when watching TV). It doesn't ever spin down. The BIOS reports CPU temp in the low to mid 30s so it shouldn't be running this loud (the odd thing is the CPU Fan Speed isn't reported ... shows N/A). Anyway, I saw from other threads that I should update the bios to .17 which I did but it has not helped at all.

I'm baffled as to what has happened .... why the fan is like this. It's really a shame since I can't really do much with it as an HTPC, or regular PC since it's so noisy. Maybe it could be useful as a small media server stuck in some closet in the basement.

CPU Fan Mode Setting is [Smart Mode]
CPU Fan Full Speed Temp: 70
CPU Fan Start Temp Value: 40
CPU Fan Start PWM Value: 80

BIOS Info:
Core Version 5.13
Compliancy: UEFI 2.7: PI 1.6
Project Version: GML0B 0.17 x64

Perhaps someone has experienced this before. I would understand the fan failing, but don't understand why a fan is constantly on high like this. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Check in BIOS, Advanced, H/W Monitor, CPU Fan Mode Setting is set to Smart Mode.

Thank you, but CPU Fan Mode Setting is already set to Smart Mode.

Also:
CPU Fan Full Speed Temp: 70
CPU Fan Start Temp Value: 40
CPU Fan Start PWM Value: 80

Those are the defaults I believe.

I noticed from another thread that there is a .24 bios version available ( https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/j50c-4-family-windows-11-discussion.4020/post-35563 ) so I went ahead and updated from .17 to .24. It went successfully, but unfortunately no difference in the constant high fan speed.

I realise that the system isn't reporting any significant heat; Although, if temp readings are in the BIOS only the CPU would have drastically changed in temp from your activity in the OS to rebooting back to the BIOS.

Nevertheless, have you tried blasting some compressed air through the air intake to clear out any dust etc. & see if that helps. Otherwise, it may also be worth removing the underside for a quick visual inspection too.

I'd also double check reported CPU temps while the OS is actually active. (Core Temp is a small & lite tool.) Ensure you haven't got anything going on that's actively hammering your CPU & therein driving temps drastically upwards. Depending on your results there, you may be able to troubleshoot what's taxing your CPU.

I'm not saying these are the cause as I have an N42 & a J50 that are both prone to spinning their fans up far higher than is actually necessary & it can be irritating at times unfortunately. They're merely suggestions & worth checking to at least rule them out as possible factors.
