Hi guys just picked up this neo u1 cheap and wondering if i can put Kodi 18 on it or am i better to try and use 17? Was successful downloading 18 from play store but can't seem to get a build on it

kodi builds are not discussed here on this forum.....
dont use a build anway...
kodi 18 should work fine
google is your friend

I ended up using Kodi 17.6 and so far seems to work ok.I do have another question .This NEO U1 has the lollipop 5.1.1 firmware.I do not know anything about rooting and what exactly it does. Also what is the advantage of putting the custom marshmallow rom on the minix?.Last time i tried to flash firmware on an older android box i bricked it lol

The u1 running minix latest firmware is very stable. As everything is working fine why would you want to change ?

If you dont know anything about rooting then research it. Ive never found the need to, others may give you reasons why they have.

I'll never forget what a member once said on the old Forum.."If you don't know anything about Rooting, you more than likely don't need to Root ":)
you can really mess things up if you don't have a good clear understanding of what you are doing... ;)

Most posts asking for help on this forum arise from tinkering, best advice is if it's working then let it be.

Rooting can have advantages but it is generally done by more advanced users. With root you have access to the system folder which allows for deleting bloatware or for adding custom remote files for example, both of which can be done via adb rather than rooting. Ad blocking is another top reason but again this can be accomplished now via apps like Blokada.

A more simple explanation, root is like having administrator rights on Windows which can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and can open you up to exploits.
