If the fan seems to be constantly spinning up at higher RPM's than normal & the external casing also seems to be very hot it may be a sign that the vents, heatsinks, and/or the fan are becoming heavily clogged with dust. Otherwise, there's really no need for "routine" maintenance & obviously you'd know fairly quickly if the fan ceases to function too.
They're really very simple to clean. Just remove the base plate & carefully lift out the main board to access the fan. (Apologies, however, I had a look inside my N42C-4 when I put in new RAM/SSD but it was so long ago I can't remember if there's a retaining screw(s) or not.)
Probably a good idea to observe anti-static precautions whilst you're at it though. Just use a can of compressed air to remove any excess dust & don't use a vacuum cleaner, (they cause static).

And put you finger on top of fan to block it. With compressed air it can turn very quickly and then produce induced current to the motherboard.
