MINIX NEO J50C-4: Installing Windows 10 Pro on SSD

...But how? (Treat me like an idiot/Mac User!). I have a USB stick with Win10 on it.

Thanks.

Edit: on re-boot, the SSD has now renamed itself to E/ rather than D/
One way would be to clone the eMMC installation to the SSD.

Here is a guide...
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-clone-your-pcs-hard-drive-macrium-reflect

Here is a video...

I've just used Macrium Reflect to clone from eMMC (32GB) to SSD (240GB)

The only step I missed was to make sure one of the partitions is enlarged to fill the unused space.
So I did it again, this time enlarging the relevant partition! ;)

There are 4 partitions.
Partition 3 needs enlarging before dragging in partition 4.
Select Partition 3 and select Cloned Partition Properties.
Enter 752MB (the size of partition 4) in to the Free Space box.
Now drag in partition 4.

The cloning takes around 10 minutes.

After cloning.

I restarted the device and entered BIOS.
Disabled the eMMC (It may not be necessary?!)
Selected SSD as 1st Boot Option.
Saved and exited.
Device booted to SSD.
I restarted again.
Entered BIOS and enabled the eMMC.
Checked Boot Option to make sure SSD was still 1st.
Device booted to SSD.
SSD is C/ and eMMC is D/
Used MiniTool Partition Wizard to remove all partitions of the eMMC.
Created a Simple Volume on eMMC.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks Villa, it looks complicated - but I'll do some research - many thanks!

I’ve managed to get the latest version of Win10 onto the machine…but because the PC doesn’t recognise the SSD (I did reformat it) it is now on the eMMC.

I’m beginning to think that the SSD isn’t compatible with the latest BIOS and/or motherboard.

Perhaps I need a new SSD and to put the old one back into the previous Minix and sell it on(?)

Perhaps a cloning tool would be another option (as suggested on the forum).

Richard

Hello all,
I'm having quite the same problem (on the N42C) that i'll describe in a new thread soon (after some more testing).

Selected SSD as 1st Boot Option.

Are you in GPT/UEFI mode ? How do you select a disk and not the Windows Boot Manager ?

Thanks Villa. Since doing all the other stuff outlined above I can't see the SSD at all in Win10. More research after dinner.

You need to go to Storage, Disk Management and assign a new Drive Letter.
It has probably lost its Drive Letter!

I've been looking at the list of approved/tested SSDs (250-500GB). Nearly all on the list are obsolete/unobtainable!

Please can we have an up-to-date list as a matter of urgency?

OK Guys, very many thanks.

Something weird has happened. I re-booted the machine 2-3 times, went for a walk, came back and Windows10 is now installed on 'C' drive...which is approx 250gb...so it MUST be on the SSD. The eMMC doesn't appear.

I'm in shock but pleased the WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD M.2 2280 works OK.

Presumably it's OK to enable the eMMC?

I've downloaded missing apps and all seems fine.

Hope that helps!

Thanks again... (and people wonder why apple OS is so popular!)

Thank you! :)

Some user's don't agree!
Here's a post from earlier today...

Sometimes an automated Windows update is in progress in the background & they can quite literally choke the system until completed.

Sometimes it pays to leave the device on & just let it be :) (Some Win 10 users have literally reported many hours of nothing at all then their system suddenly came to life with no apparent cause why it wasn't responding in the first place.)

Hope you're all good from here on out :).

Thank you! :)

Flat Earthers/Anti-Vaccers/idiots...and looking above, arrogant folk who can't even punctuate properly!

Potentially hurtful I know, but please don't worry - keyboard-warrior cowards lurk everywhere.

Where's Covid-19 when you need it?

I wish to thank you publicly for your assistance.

Hi.
If you are using Macrium Reflect to clone suggested by @Villa i advice you also read this: (it might be tricky)
https://www.howtogeek.com/school/using-windows-admin-tools-like-a-pro/lesson4/

-If you are not sure and you have doubts it is better copy the important files (such as personal documents etc) to external device (USB, etc) and install windows on SSD (normal minix installation):
https://theminixforum.com/index.php...ows-10-pro-os-installation-instructions.2159/

-then is just copy again from external device to SSD

Note:
If you are using minix firmware installation be aware that all data is lost when you execute the script (eMMC if enable on BIOS and SSD).
I tested several minix devices with PXE (network boot), it works and you can use windows 10 images from microsoft to install the Operating System
