Minix NEO U1 Elongated Icon Space

Does anyone know why on the U1 on the latest FW013 firmware the icon spaces when you highlight the icon is more elongated than on other Minix boxes ? You can only fit six icons on the bottom screen instead of eight. This is very noticeable on Fancy Widget icons where it stretches to almost the border of the screen.

The only board I seem to find with that icon size is the Laucher3 where the maximum number of icons per row is also six. It could have been a request from some users in the old forum that thought the icons were eventually too narrow in a previous version. I always used Minix Metro, so I can't recall if the U1 ever had 8 icons in a row in Launcher3.

I tried to change the resolution, text size, etc, in a U1 a while ago, but I found no way to change that. When you check for instance the "All Apps" folder pressing the middle icon of the bottom of the screen you will see it fits 8 icons, so it is not a standard. Maybe it is possible to change in some system file hidden in the rooted area, but that is far beyond my knowledge.

Many requests sent evolution in different directions those days as new firmwares were created, I remember people complaining for the blue light being too strong while others mentioned it was hard to spot in day light, the U9-H has a stronger light, maybe as a result... :sneaky:

If you are indeed talking about the standard Android Launcher rather than the metro launcher/desktop?

Try Nova Launcher instead ;). The free version has no ads at all & it's highly customisable too. You can keep it all as simple as you wish, or you can delve much deeper into the customisation for the exact layout you'd like to have.

You can specify the layout & number of icons on your desktop grid as well (the main upper part of your desktop), & you can also specify how many icons you can place in your dock, (the lower part).

It's always ran very well indeed on a number of my Android devices, past & present. You can even give older Android versions a more updated look to have the appearance of Android Oreo etc. if you wish.

It's one of the most popular 3rd party launchers & for good reason. Well worth giving it a look & see what you think :).

Yes, its the stock Minix Android launcher. I don't particularily like using 3rd party launchers since it takes up more storage space. I guess I will try to extract the stock Minix Launcher from my X8-H and try it on the U1 and see.

Reporting back on trying to install the stock Minix Launcher from v4.4.2-20160323 from my X8-H, not the stock Launcher3 from Android 5.1.1.
The launcher installed with no problems, but the icons cannot be moved or be active and every time when I click on an icon the launcher option page would pop up ...weird ...so no good ! I don't know what Minix was thinking when they used this stock Launcher3 on the U1 everything about it seems to be off including the off centered white background in the apps page where it used to be all black !

Nova Launcher only uses 36-39 MB :).

Shouldn't make too much of a dent in your available storage ;).
