MINIX NEO Z83-4: Firmware re-installation instructions

MINIX - Martin

Staff member
If you need to re-install the firmware for the NEO Z83-4, please follow these steps.
Please note, Re-installing the firmware shall wipe everything on the eMMC(C: drive, 32GB) where the Windows 10 OS is installed.
So you'll have to back up your essential data in case they will lose forever.

1. Go to this webpage to download the firmware.

2. Create a UEFI bootable USB memory stick.
Prepare an 8GB or 16GB of NTFS format USB memory stick and change the name to “WINPE”.

3. Unzip the firmware files, and then copy all child files and folders to the root directory of the USB stick. (See Firmware files at the root directory.png)

4. Connect the keyboard and USB stick to the Z83-4, power on the Z83-4, then press F11 button and select the USB stick to boot in the prompt window. (See Boot device.jpg)
You don’t need to do anything, just wait for the installation finished. It’ll take about 15 minutes.

5. When you see the same window as Cleanup Test.jpg, please click the “Cleanup Test” on the desktop, then the box whall re-start.
Finish the initial setups for the Windows and enjoy it.

Thank you very much, the instructions and installation was very simple and easy. My only problem is with the sd card reader, shows error code 10 "cannot start" when I insert the sd card. I tried the "fix sd card problem" driver but it didn't work for me. If there is a solution to this problem please let me know. Other than that all drivers are working normal. Thank you again.

I updated via Windows Update Assistant before checking the forum. It ended up with a BlueScreen and it kept rebooting. I followed the instructions here and got a different BlueScreen error when I tried to boot from USB drive. After about 45mins of making changes to settings and using different drives I got it to work. I had to go into the BIOS and disable all boot devices under "Boot Option Priorities" except the the USB drive. I also changed "UEFI Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities" to the USB Drive. This was the only way I got the USB drive to boot properly with no errors. Everything works good now. Thanks! :)

I just finished the re-install this AM and everything went smoothly per the above directions. It does sit on the MINIX screen for ~15-20 minutes so I recommend patience.

I follow these instructions, but after booting from the USB stick it simply loads up my desktop as normal - no reset happens.

Chiming in, that this procedure worked for me.

Noting for those less technically inclined, "2) Create a UEFI bootable USB memory stick" can be done using Rufus.

Hi all,
Ok so I'm a noob I have tried following the instruction on updating my minix to 1903 and I have also followed the instruction on creating a UEFI USB stick using rufus, I then copying the files onto it and booting the minix as per the instructions.
I have tried all different ways of trying to get the usb to show up but nothing works.
when I create the USB using rufus it creates to two partitions 1 being called UEFI_NTSC with no files in it and another partition called WINPE(NTFS) with 2 files in it 1 being and autorun ico file and the other being an autorun inf files and the whole usb is GPT.
Have I setup rufus to do the right type of UEFI usb?
Do I delete these 2 files and just copy the unzipped portion on the image into that location or do I leave them and still copy the files over or am I off on a completely wrong direction.
I have attached an image of rufus setup.

I don't have your device and i don't know if you need rufus.
I tested several minix images but with other devices (N42C-4 for example, i did not use rufus).
Try this: (without rufus)
Just format external usb with windows - NTFS , name WINPE and follow the rest of the instructions.
