Minix U9 FW0008 - Rebooting itself

FTR: John was a great help in sourcing a new PSU. Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem.

Unfortunately #2, I bought the unit May 2018 so warranty has expired. John said I could send it to Hong Kong at my expense and they'd take a look at it and send it back at their expense. Turns out that Canuck Post wants $60 to send it so I declined.

All in all... Not bad customer service.

I've had the box for about a year. 6 months ago it started to reboot itself every month or 2 so I just lived with it. At the end of May, it started to reboot itself once a week and I kept ignoring it. For the last couple of weeks, it's rebooted nightly in the middle of watching shows, so it's time that I do something about it.

I did a full reset and re-installed everything from scratch on Saturday. That didn't make any difference, it's still rebooting at least once a night.
Reboots happen in both Kodi 18.2 and in IPTV, so it's not Kodi specific.
One reboot happened when I was updating an android program (Before the rebuild).

A couple of questions:

How do I look at logs to see if I can find out what's causing this?
Has anyone else seen this or have a solution?

Thanks in advance folks.
Do you use a VPN?

Most of the time I do.
Do you use pia vpn app?
Do you have also this problem without the VPN?
I am not sure yet but i think maybe the VPN app cause this problem.
Our maybe it is just a bug in this Android.
Have no problem with CoreElec but there it not connected to vpn with a app but by a plugin that's not work on Android

Been using the PIA app for years on all of the minix boxes, it doesn't cause any problems....

So than its have to be kodi on android but probably the firmware (fw008) because apparentlyit is not only with kodi... looking forward for the minix neo u22-xj because with the u9 i have a lot of troubles with kodi Its works wel with CoreElec but i hope with the new box I don't need it any more

I doubt that as well.
I have U9 on FW008 running Kodi with quite an advanced set up playing high quality/bitrate media files and it never misses a beat.

I think @ItsMe has either just been unfortunate with his U9 or has something installed which is proccessor heavy and possibly causing some overheating.

Whilst being inconvienient maybe @ItsMe should try running stock firmware 008 with a simple kodi setup only for a while and see if it reboots

@ItsMe if you use kodi and you are watching a video you can do this before doing that:
Go to settings and enable kodi log.

Then you can have an idea what is going on.
As @pusb87 said you might have something installed that causes the box to restart (overheating).

You can also install a cpu benchmark app and let the device run that test.

I have installed on my device basically default apps, kodi 18.4 and even using the box with strong processing, etc the device is always ok.

Yesterday i was playing for a long time a 4k h265 movie from my NAS, i put my hand and the device little or almost nothing warmed (i am with CE RC1.1 ROM)
In all minix devices that i have (and i noticed) it is the same thing.

@ItsMe i can't even imagine what's like -30C outside. You can try again factory reset and install Kodi 17.6 and few basic apps that you really need.Don't use NAS few days for testing purpose only movies and Tv shows from external hard disk to see is there any progress.I know it's a long shot .

@ItsMe Last but not least and i forgot to mention.
I live in Portugal and most of the times we have low temperatures.
I also have my device in a cold place.
Since you live in canada you don´t have that problem but it is very important you have the device in a controlled environment (try to test the device in a cold place)

You also can test u9h with a temperature controller device or put your hands and see if the device is hot.
As @mark lob said leave the device for a time on (one day or two i think it is enough) and test.

Maybe you right.. But if you read this forum a lot of people have problems with this box.. Including me anyway i stop trying to find the problem and use Coreelec for kodi and boot android if i need a other app.. And maybe buy the new box but first wait for some reviews

You really don't have a clue what the problem is & apparently no idea how to troubleshoot it either!!!

First it was a VPN until another user said they used it without problems so you then adjusted.

Then it "had to be Kodi on Android" or "probably the firmware".

You're guessing, repeatedly!!

You've also posted in the past about having problems using illegal add-ons with Kodi ( https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/u9-restart-with-exodus.1025/ ). Obviously this suggests that the add-on or the source of the media may be causing your problems but you don't seem to have stopped to consider this.

You've also jumped from one firmware to another (stock & beta), experienced problems & simply moved to another without stopping to actually work the problem. Or, completely switched to CoreELEC. Apparently the same problems are still present for you right across the board which isn't surprising!! What does that tell you? (Seriously, reflash back to the stock firmware & stick with it!! Then, if & when the problems start again, provide FULL details & we'll do our best to help you.)

I suspect the core problem is HOW you're using Kodi or other apps rather than the U9-H itself, Android, or a clean Kodi causing you these issues.

You've been quite careful NOT to mention what you're doing with Kodi & ultimately given very little information for others to offer any advice to resolve your problem too.

How are you playing your problem media? NAS/media server, USB device, SD card or online streams?

Do other users have issues on occasion? Yes! However, the vast majority are resolved after discussion or guidance on the forum or MINIX have replaced a very small number of problem devices as required. Invariably these problems are caused by the users themselves, misconfiguration, differing external hardware, network issues or problems with sources!

If you'd seriously like to solve this problem then go with a plan, stick to it & provide some details. As long as you're jumping all over the place you'll always be guessing & you'll never be 100% certain what the cause is.

It's up to you fella ;)!!!

I am just tried of shearing of the problems .. I just want to buy a box that works without problems.

On Android:
First it start with audio drops
After that no support any more after update to fw007 for dts hd en true HD
Now that problems solved but now it restart for streaming form nas our (legal) addon.
I don't wont to spend more time for searching for solutions than that i have time to watch movies our shows
...
On Coreelec no problems at all everything works like it should be... It wil just be easier that I don't have to switch to android for other LEGAl apps.
And yes I am guessing why it reboots after 1, 2, maybe 3 hours of streaming but is not easy to find out.

maybe it is not the firmware that works well for you ... but why I don't have this problems on Coreelec?
the hardware and kodi works... I am guessing it is a software problem

Already flash the fw008 and to fw007 but same problem

And i thought this forum could give me some solutions but apparently not
Never mind for now I keep this setup until i find a better box

I've replaced the Minix box with one from a different vendor. The new box doesn't reboot itself. (It did once, but updating the firmware fixed it)

I've used PIA, VPN.AC, and Warp+. The minix box rebooted under all of these 'VPN's'.

I installed and ran ANTUTU multiple times before I even started this thread. It didn't show much. It runs hot, but not overly hot during tests.

The reboot problem has happend with and without Kodi running, so I doubt it's Kodi related.

I always remove apps that I don't use. Just the basic provided apps + Kodi + VPN.

The box worked perfectly for a long time, then it started to reboot itself. The reboot problem did not coincide with a firmware change or a VPN change or a Kodi change (I stopped using nightly's a while back). Most likely not a software problem.

My friend has tried a new charger to his Minix box but still it reboots itself. Running latest update, no other OS but standard Android that came with the box.
I am going to flash the firmware again to see if it is causing the problem. Which version should I use? FW008?

I have had the U9 for about 2 years. It has had the same problem, reboots to loading Android.
Has been at fw-008 for about 12 months, same problem.
Can reboot spontaneously -while not being used (and turns on the TV via HDMI).
Reboots when streaming using any app, or when using utorrent.
Appears to fail multiple times per evening.
Have re-imaged and re-updated to FW008.
Happens with or without a VPN.
POSSIBLE scenario! (long stretch)
Many times fails downloading until app restarted - whichever download app is in use.
Download can (sometimes) be continued if wifi turned off and then on again.

Tried with long Cat6 cable -APPEARED to have no issue for a few hours.
Back on wifi (2.4 OR 5 gHz) same issue.
Still doing it today.

Not sure if related to wifi!

FTR: I didn't use WiFi I used a LAN cable and still had the rebooting problem.

My opinion is:
If we have a device that reboots itself, that is not related to wifi or ethernet.

Never had a device that had that issue.

I have a old mobile device that if i use the latest firmware and turn on wifi sometimes the device crash (but never reboot by itself), that crash happens because the device has a hardware problem.
For that mobile i use the first firmware available and it is working wifi without any problem (i can turn on/off the times that i want)
