NEO P1 - strange "switching" and operating temperature?

Hi!

I have bought NEO P1 recently. While it seems to be working, I have noticed some behavior which seems a bit odd.

1) If I have one device already plugged in (USB-C Laptop), then when I plug in the second device - all charging stops for a moment and then resumes.
While it might be ok considering the device must switch power load, it is still quite strange. Usually charging devices don't do that.
Is it the "intended" behavior for P1?

2) While charging USB-C Laptop (in just normal Web-browsing usage, not anything harder - no gaming, encoding, etc.) P1 is running pretty hot. Not normally "warm", but pretty hot.
What is the operating temperature for P1?

I was very kindly sent a couple of the "P2" variants which are obviously very similar (although, my father uses one of them at his residence). The P2 variant I'm using here exhibits identical behaviour to what you've described as well but the other P2 doesn't seem to, so far at least. (I can't say I've noticed excessive heat from it, however, even under higher loads, just warm.)

What's more, after it has initially done the stop/start thing when I've connected an additional device for charging as you've described, it also continues to drop power on all used ports just for a split second at random intervals, but then immediately resumes normal charging again. (Not a huge problem for the most part or for the way I'm using this particular P2 myself, but it has got a bit annoying at times when (as one example), charging tablets & the charging sounds/screen are repeatedly triggering on/off when this issue is ongoing, or other devices I'm charging keep randomly lighting up too.)

Ultimately, I would say it's not an intended behaviour as the other P2 doesn't seem to do it, so if you've just purchased the charger it may be advisable to return it to your reseller for a straight replacement from them. (I'm fairly sure I also remember one or two of the guys mentioning that they're actually using theirs more as a PSU to actively power other MINIX devices such as a Neo U9-H, T5 or a U22 that obviously require a continuous current or the interruptions could potentially cause random shut downs. However, in using them more as a PSU to actually power a device(s) such as an Android media hub, they're possibly not using them as a charger at the same time.)

@Villa , was it you that posted some info about effectively using a P1 or P2 more as a PSU for one or more of your MINIX Android media hubs mate? Any comments?

:) :).

I merely tried it!
I haven't run a device indefinitely on it yet.

Good day Day DAllein, hope you are doing well.

The switching behaviour that you have experienced seems to be the norm for GaN based chargers, I have a few and they all do this, I believe that it's the MCU picking up the new device, then redistributing / load balancing max available to output over all ports to prevent overloading.

As for charging temperatures, it's fairly common place for pretty much any charger to get fairly warm with large loads relative to size / maximum capacity, I wouldn't worry too much thought, GaN chargers have pretty good thermal operational ranges, and can take a good grilling :)
