@ghorton1 i saw you have u9h and u1 minix devices.
Make separate folders when you copy the downloaded firmwares to you.

When you update the firmware make sure you flash for the right device like @Marty said.

I tried all the steps but it gets to 7% (formatting) and then it stops working, any suggestions?

Kyle did you ever get this resolved? I'm trying to burn U1-FW013-Android_5.1-20170629-Burning_Tool and its also stopping at 7%

I don't think it has root out of the box, I remember having to install SuperSU via TWRP.
Of course now I'm using MooseJaw's unofficial Marshmallow, and this does have indeed root:
