NEO U1 - 4K 10 Bit HDR looks washed out

Hi guys,

I have a Sony Bravia X7077 and a Minix NEO U1. When I stream 4K, 10 Bit HDR movies, they look washed out. When I watch the 1080P or SDR variant, the colors have a lot more pop.

My TV is able to play 4K HDR, I put my HDMI setting on enhanced, but I'm now loking for option in Kodi or Android to push the signal correctly to my TV. I have googled, but I'm not able to get it working.

Any tips?

Neo U1 doesn't support HDR but supports 10bit x265 Hevc. Some HDR movies o Neo U9-H look washed up but as you notice SDR looks better.

Hmm, looks like most specs say that it does support HDR, but the box doesn't.

So If I want that, what is the best upgrade, the U9-H, or the T5?

Ik know the T5 is newer, but reading mixed things about which processor is actually faster.

If I choose the T5, which now by default has Android TV as the OS, will I be able to run Kodi as on the U1? I can see the app in the Playstore, so I assume the answer is yes, just checking to make sure.

EDIT:

Looks like the U22 is more a replacement for the U1, as it is running Android OS, instead of Android TV OS. But the pricing is quite high compared to the older U9H and new T5.

@frankguthrie with Neo T5 you will be able run Kodi as on the U1 and U9-H.There is no restriction on Android Tv to run Kodi.Neo T5 is much faster than U1 nearly fast as Neo U9-H.Neo T5 is very good choice for the price.

So you vote is for the T5 it seems?

I think that might be indeed the better choice as the processor is newer than the one in the UH9. (T5 with S905x2=) 12nm > (UH9 with S912=) 28 nm

Which means less power usage. Unless there might be a reason to go for the UH9. but for now I'm leaning to the T5, based on the replies so far. I do only use the box to play movies, not to play games. Also the fact that the T5 is cheaper than the UH9 makes it more the preferred choice.

There will also be the U22-XJ

I guess it will be more expensive than the T5.

Availability of apps from the Play Store is vastly reduced on Android TV devices directly compared to pure Android.

If Kodi is really all you need from the device to playback media & you don't plan on adding various other apps; then the T5 with the Android TV OS will probably be all you need.

If you have a lot of apps on your U1 that you'd like to use on a new device check around to see if they're available on ATV. If not, it might be worth waiting for the U22-XJ.

It's subjective pros & cons as always :).

That is really interesting. I never knew there was a difference!

I use Kodi to stream movies from my PC/NAS to my TV. For my kid I use Youtube kids, but that is the only thing I want from it and have used the past 3 years.

In that sense I guess I'm ok with the T5.

I know that :)

For the rest I have to contemplate which box I will actually go for. Even thou the U9 is old, the processor is still fast enough and is still in consideration. The UH9 and T5 are already available, the U22XJ is arriving this coming November. Pricing tells me T5, but I might be susceptible for the faster processor of the U22XJ.

@frankguthrie there is no rush to buy. It's all up to you which one to buy when time is come☺️

Well the time has come, because all my 4K HDR movies look horrible :p and my library is growing. So is my annoyance at look at flat colors, while they look better on my PC. But that is 21 inch, vs 55 inch of my TV.

Any thoughts of buying the box from this seller on AliExpress:

The call themselves Official Minix Store, but is it the official store??? I heard Minix is Chinese, but I'm hesitant to buy hardware from Ali Express. I don't want to get a cheap knockoff.

I'd be wary about anyone selling the T5 as it has not yet been officially released!

According to this article it is released:
https://www.cnx-software.com/2019/0...-amlogic-s905x2-s922xj-android-tv-media-hubs/

MINIX NEO T5 is the very first official Android TV media hub by the company. Pre-sales will start in about two weeks, and the box will become available in early October for around 85 Euros in Europe.

Also this article says October. We are nearing the end of October:
https://www.priceboon.com/product/mini-neo-t5/
It is expected that the MINIX NEO T5 will go on sale in October at a price of about $100.

Does Minix have their own official website?

while your deciding what to buy next you can probably use your TV's OS system to stream your HDR media.
You may even be able to install Kodi on your TV
Worth checking your TV user manual

No, I bought the Sony XF70, specially because it did not have Android TV OS. As every review was saying it was slow on Sony TV's. My version has an OS which actually has been discontinued, called VEWD TV. So everything needs to go through the Minix Box, which I don't mind.
