NEO U1 - 4K 10 Bit HDR looks washed out

Yes. But I have seen a forum member already had the device, Also here in the Netherlands They have the box on sale trough a webshop. I bought the Neo U1 from the same shop in the Netherlands last time. The thing is still running. If it is a fake, it's a pretty good one. So If they can sell it here, why not on AliExpress?

https://www.minixwebshop.nl/neo-t5.html

According to them it is in stock. If I order before 23:45, I'll have it the next day. So I guess they are already selling this thing.

Got it!

Had I bought it from Ali, I would pay the almost the same amount as local pricing, because when you import over a certain amount, you need to pay 21% tax and also custom tax, which would have made the box almost as expensive as buying it local. At least now I can claim warranty, the first year, with a local company.

BTW I live in the Netherlands, and Disney+ is already available to us. On the Minix U1 it is not supported..... This Neo T5 with official Google certification might. I'll let you know.

I really hope my 4K HDR movies now look a lot better (color correct).

As you can see the box is being delivered with 1 Powercord for different power outlets. This make it easier to sell I think all around the world. Nice touch:

The Minix Neo T5 is a lot smaller then the Neo U1:

BTW, this box has NO powerbutton. Is it supposed to stay on permanently..?

As you can see the color are a lot better and not washed out.

Unfortunately the picture are not of high quality as my Android App has compressed them down a lot.

I have to say that Kodi 18.4 is buffering a lot like it's not able to keep up. Didn't have that problem on my older U1/Kodi. I think that came with version 15 or 16.

EDIT: Looks like it depends per movie. Batman (1989) was buffering a lot, Batman Returns (1992) Only had 4 moments of buffering. Als this happened with actions scenes. Maybe higher framerate. My Minix is connected via a wire, but though a 500 Mbits Powerline. For 1080p I never head problems, look like this might be a probably cause, or it is still something with Kodi. Have to check a few 1080p movies to determine if I need to upgrade my powerline. Or It might be poor encoding which translates poorly when streaming over the network (source is my Windows 10 PC using SMB). Have to troubleshoot further.

@frankguthrie Kodi 16.3 for Neo U1 is XBMC Minix Edition especially develop for Neo U1 from Kodi team based on Kodi Jarvis. To test it 4K HDR 10bit x265 Hevc use torrents.Download two same movies in x265 Hevc one with less GB and the other with more GB to see how can handle lesser video bitrate and higher video bitrate in 4K 10bit HDR x265 Hevc.Because Neo T5 is very new Android Tv Box from Minix i suggest to you to write support@minix.com.hk for all your answers that you need. For high quality 4K Hevc google it for UTR Hevc or UTR Qman and download.

Thanks for the report.
Try to copy your movie to an external hard drive or USB pen drive and play it localy using Kodi 18.4.

@frankguthrie you are in testing phase and like @Skynet suggested play your movies localy from external hard drive or usb flash drive.Connect external hard drive 3.0 to usb port 3.0 to test read and write.

Excellent suggestion. Should have thought about it myself working in IT as a network Engineer I forgot basic troubleshooting :censored:.

However I just had to powercycle the device as it was updating Youtube and other google related stuff. This was going for hours. After the reboot the box looked a lot better. Updating Youtube and other Google services seemed to hang. It looked like my TCP/IP stack crashed as I could not stream anymore. I think the buffering might had to do with Google Services being updated eating up bandwidth, hence the buffering. I will keep checking 4K movies and if buffering happens again, I wil put it on a USB Drive and connect it directly to the box.

BTW Can any of you help with Calibration. I want to get the best picture quality

I have set my Picture mode to Movie, because that is what I used it most for, the default was Standard:

- I haven't noticed a difference to be honest, what do you recommend? Keep Movie, or go back to Standard?
- Should I turn DNR off or keep it at the default of Medium?
- Back light 90% by default, should I push it to 100%? I always have a light next to the TV, because otherwise my eyes hurt.

When it comes to Resolution/Refresh/Color space rate:

What does the Color space setting do? I can Turn it On
1572109982199.png

By default it is on 4K 60Hz, but because I will use Kodi to stream movies, isn't 24Hz/25Hz better?

And what about Color Space settings:
1572110490101.png

It seems, from Googling, that 444 is better, but has no use for watching Movies:
https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/chroma-subsampling

Does Android TV pick the best options by default? And thus should I leave everything on what it came out of the box with? Or should I tweak the above settings a bit?

No, keep 4K @ 60HZ, Kodi will swith to the correct framerate.

I don't know yet, it depends of your eye

It's the correct setting for best use.

Not every times, you have to tweak it sometimes.

You mean that I should leave it turned off correct? I just turned it on, but my eye isn't that trained to see any differences.

@frankguthrie you already have T5.
Thank you for your feedback.
As said before you are in testing mode.
My idea if you want is give us your feedback about the device, maybe here ?

I think you might be right. Created a new thread for it:
