Neo U1 to old Denon Surround Sound Receiver

Hello everyone,

This is my fist post on here. I hope someone is able to help.

I have a Minix Neo U1 and want to connect it to my surround sound receiver, which is a Denon AVR - 1801. Yes its old, I know !! it doesn't have HDMI ports !!.

I have included a picture of the back of the receiver so you can see the multitude of old connection options I have available. Having read some of the other threads I think that I may be able to use the SPDIF connection on the Minix but not quite sure what other end of the cable should look like e.g. which input to connect it to / use on the receiver. I have never connected anything using SPDIF so have no knowledge of what cable options are available.

Any help very much appreciated.

Het Marty Thanks so much for the super prompt reply. So the cable I need to buy will look like this....? I think the connection is caled Toslink ?

Do I need to do anything to the Minix or does it "just work" when I plug in the cable !!

You may additionally need to specify SPDIF or optical within some apps themselves for audio passthrough (i.e. Kodi) in addition to the main device audio settings.

Depending on the particulars of your older AVR you may also need to specify that the AVR also uses SPDIF/optical (TOSLINK) in the input settings as well ;)!!

The connectors on TOSLINK cables are shaped so they will only fit in the ports one way but double check the correct orientation/alignment & don't force plugging them in. (It varies from one manufacturer to another but some TOSLINK cables can also be very easy to damage too, (remember they're just a very thin fibre optic filament at the core). Avoid excessive bending or tight coiling along the length of the cable, handle, & route them carefully ;).
