Unfortunately notCan I boot the rooted version of FW005 from the SD card
You can flash with erase bootloader onlyI currently have FW005 running, however want to fix the generic.kl issue to use my external keyboard properly. However, I don't want to loose my data by flashing the rooted version of FW005. Can I boot the rooted version of FW005 from the SD card, edit/delete the generic.kl file, remove SD card and reboot to FW005 non-rooted WITHOUT loosing my data?? I have an SD card formatted for FAT32. If so, please let me know the steps. Thanks!!
He wants to flash back to non root aterwards so it will overwrite the .kl file with this method unfortunately. You can flash with erase bootloader only

this will not overwrite your existing data and apps .
Have you tried "External Keyboard Helper" like @talbotship has said works for him, not ideal I know but worth a shot:I currently have FW005 running, however want to fix the generic.kl issue to use my external keyboard properly. Is there a root file to be able to flash easily without PC connection?
Have you switched root On in Settings?I just flashed my Minix U22-XJ with the rooted version using the USB Burning Tool, carefully following the provided instructions. The process went smooth and I got the Success message in the end. When starting the Minix I see that the background has changed to blue so something has clearly happened. I still do not seem to have root access however. None of my root apps are working and Root Checker gives a negative result. Neither do I see any Super SU or Magisk Manager among the apps. Am I missing something here?
Thanks man. I had e feeling it would be that simple, but just couldn't find that switch.Have you switched root On in Settings?
You updated the binaries for SuperSU which causes a bootloop on the U22, lesson learnt...PM sent. Thanks man. I had e feeling it would be that simple, but just couldn't find that switch.
Now, having switched the root button it all seemed great. I Installed the latest version of SuperSU (this one: https://supersu.co/). Having launched the app it immediately detected root access and wanted to install something (don't remember the words). I pressed "Yes" and I got a message that the procedure was successful. After that it asked to reboot which I did. After reboot however, the system didn't want to boot up. It got stuck at the second Minix logo (the one with animation). I pulled the plug and tried two more times, leaving it about 10 minutes each time but it was really stuck.
Then I thought to re-flash the rooted image (version 5). I followed the instructions to the point, but it got stuck somewhere at the beginning. I have then retried several times, but each time it gets stuck at different steps, between 7-20%. I have tried to change from "normal erase" to "erase all" but the result is the same. The progress bar of the USB Burning Tool gets stuck at some early stage.
I hope I didn't brick it. Would really appreciate some further advice.
I have a new U22 coming and am starting to ramp up getting ready for its arrival. I understand from John that the firmware will come rooted easily by a switch in settings. This is great for me!You updated the binaries for SuperSU which causes a bootloop on the U22, lesson learnt...PM sent.
I don't recommend SuperSu anymore, the app is dead now, Chainfire the main developer stopped it years ago.Reply

But if this is at all like the AllWinner H6 box I recently tried and returned, there was no root "supervisor" app. And I would prefer to have one although on that box I could do what I needed without it - just don't like flying blind. I have finally been forced on my phone to move from superSu to Magisk and so would prefer to go that route. But superSu is ok too, I guess.
So is the superSu pointed at above working with the Android 9 that comes on the U22?
And if you have any other suggestions, they are most welcome.
Thanks
