NEO Z83-4: Ubuntu 18.04.01 Build

I initially had an HDMI to VGA cable and nothing plugged into the audio out stereo cable output. I moved the Minux over to the Entertainment center and plugged the HDMI into my A/V receiver, then it somehow detected/displayed the sound hardware devices. Works now, but I have to manually select the sound output each time. The default audio output selection does not work.
I faced similar problem. The sound device was not listed when I connected Minix to an LCD monitor. But the sound was working fine when I connected to a TV.

So I tried this but it was never able to boot to it properly after I selected to the boot option it popped up with the install or try menu and after I selected 'install', the screen turn black and I assume that it had stopped giving a display signal
I had similar issue. Instead of "Try Ubuntu" I selected "Install Ubuntu" and this time it worked.

My WLAN works fine, but ubuntu does not detect sound card??? Do not even see Dummy Output Any ideas?
I installed the ubuntu build listed on page 1. That allowed my WIFI to work, but sound is a no go. Tried
sudo alsa force-reload
and
sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
And force reload Alsa again:
sudo alsa force-reload

Ubuntu still does not see sound controller?
I have a NEO Z83-4 Model Z834-6C1058
ran
alsamixer
says
Card: Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio
and
This sound device does not have any controls.

I tested and it is ok, Mobile and in a desktop win10.
Try use a download manager if you can.

Maybe you have something blocking also...
Test your internet connection.
Disable temporarily possible blocking programs like for example anti-virus/firewall.

Try with firefox, edge.

Using Getright gives me the error DISCONNECTED FROM THE SERVER a few seconds after the download starts. Is there another download manage you guys have used?

After having issues getting WiFi working using Ubuntu 19.10 server I tried this ISO. WiFi does work however it only works for 2.4 despite the marketing of the product stating that it supports 5.0Ghz.

Which wireless NIC is used/what are the steps to get this resolved?

Thanks

Obviously, it's another device entirely & I'm using it purely as an example....

...I have an Amazon Fire HD tab that also has 5 Ghz WiFi. However, I couldn't get my Fire tab to even see my 5 Ghz SSID on the router as long as the router was automatically assigning the available 5 Ghz channels. (I'm working from memory & I'm not looking at my router's UI, but I had to set my router to use channels 40 & below on the 5 Ghz spectrum (40 or thereabouts). After I manually assigned the available 5 Ghz channel range the Fire HD tab would then see, & successfully connect.)

If your router has the capability, try manually assigning the different ranges of 5 Ghz channels available to you & then see if your Z83-4 picks it up again. (You may need to try each of the available options your specific router allows & you may need to reboot both your router & your Z83 after each trial.)

The Z83-4 with Windows also correctly handles 5 Ghz if memory serves. This may be an issue with the version of Ubuntu you're using rather than the NIC hardware itself.

Worth trying out to see if that's of any help to apply to your circumstances, or not :).

Read here too. (Another user recently had issues with Linux OS's not correctly recognising the WiFi adapter & associated issues.).... https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/linuxmint.767/#post-15255

Failing that, @linuxium would be one of the best members to ask for help in this instance :).

Hi All, first off, thanks for posting this really helpful guide!

I had windows installed on my Minix, but as web browsers were beginning to run painfully slowly and Windows used a lot of the minimal space available, i thought this might be lighter weight and a better option for the system. it is used essentially as a media center, so all i need is a browser to stream and i have kodi for my local media from a hard drive.

no issues installing, and browsers work ok for the most part, other than video streaming. on any streaming site such as iPlayer, the streams are quite 'choppy'. not laggy, and audio is fine, but the picture is very far from smooth.

Is this something others have experienced? is there anything that could improve this? or is it just a case of the system being a year or two old and has gone crap?

thanks in advance!

Gary

Hello, I've tried to clean my minix z83-4 pro windows 10 and install your ubuntu 18 iso (or early before) but when I finished to install it, I reboot, then logo MINIX, then purple screen and my screen gone in sleep mode.
I fund about the boot in nomodeset, but is it the ideal solution?
thank you

No. Boot into Ubuntu via the recovery screen (... An alternative work around on the MINIX Neo Z83-4U device is to interrupt the GRUB boot process by pressing ESC when it comes up with the purple screen. From the menu that appears select the "Advanced options for Ubuntu" and then the "recovery" option of the kernel you want to boot e.g. Ubuntu, with Linux 4.15.0-60-generic (recovery mode). After a few moments, it will display a Recovery Menu with a number of options. Select the first option "resume" for "Resume normal boot" followed by "OK"... see here)" and then enter the commands 'sudo apt update' followed by 'sudo apt upgrade' to upgrade your kernel to one that fixes the bug you have encountered.

Hi, I've just tried these, but I'm always the sleep mode which goes after watching the minix logo. In nomodeset, my videos lag, it means the graphic card isn't good

If you use nomodeset to boot what kernel version/release are you running (i.e. what is the output of 'uname -r')?
