Probably a stupid problem - but why aren't photos showing in full resolution

Probably something stupid, but I've just hooked up the U22 for the first time and attached a USB drive to look at holiday photos. They are sort of washed out, for example I can't see the grain in a table that I can see clearly when looking at the photo on a computer. The display settings are at full level. Any ideas?

home movies too, faded like they are showing at 480p as opposed to high def....unless my hdmi cable is too old (i have an old one from the tv connecting to the one supplied with the minix).

Which app are you actually using to view these photos?

Have you tried more than one app to rule out an app specific issue?

I've looked at them directly in EZ explorer, and then with Kodi. Hooked up a firetv stick with the same drive and the pics look fine. It's subtle, but definitely not full quality. Will do more tests tomorrow!

Viewers File explorers with built in photo viewers may not always give optimal viewing quality although obviously it can vary.

Kodi, however, should display them at full resolution.

Try a standalone photo viewer just to check it's not app specific. There's no reason why the U22 would automatically downsample media if you're definitely viewing the original images at their full resolution & they haven't been converted into a lossy format etc.

So, issue resolved, though not entirely clear why. I went into settings, and into picture settings, and switched "picture mode" to "user" and DNR noise reduction to "off". Photos now fine. What I can't figure out is that I went back in and turned the DNR back on and the photos were still fine. So something funny there. But DNR does appear to have something to do with it. Leaving it off anyway.

Had a first play around with the U22 last night (my first Android box other than a FireTv stick), and really like it, using Launcher 3 though, find the icons on the other minix launcher a bit big on the icons. Read about a few other launchers online and might play around with it. But very happy with speed of system and looking forward to adding apps and getting the most out of it.

Be sure to check out Nova Launcher.

I've been using it for years. I like to try other launchers but I keep coming back to Nova! ;)

Nova has some issues on the U22-XJ (Maybe it's Android 9 issue?) but there are work arounds!

Enjoy! :)

Definitely second Nova Launcher for your U22 to give you greater control over the general look & feel. (I just use the free version but the paid version unlocks a few small extras.) It has a couple of small niggles (as mentioned above) at this time but like @Villa I've also been using it for years as well.

Highly customisable if you really want to control icon placement & how everything looks in finer detail, or you can just use it but keep it as simple as you wish with minimum fuss too if that's your preference.....

....Excellent launcher, & you can even save a backup config file to immediately restore everything in case something/someone messes things up & you can even export that setup file to other devices as well. Very useful :). (Although, you can even set a lock in the app to stop anything being changed or moved once you have it how you like it too. Backups are always handy to have as well though for obvious reasons ;).)

It works very well with live/3D wallpapers too. I frequently use the "Day/Night Live Wallpaper - All" (paid) or "Vortex Galaxy" (with the paid "Galaxy Pack" add-on) live wallpapers & they look great on a large 4K screen. (I set up my mother's MINIX device with the "Falling Autumn Leaves" (free) wallpaper as per her request & that's not too bad either, (Blackbird Wallpapers do a number of half decent live wallpapers too).

Enjoy the device & enjoy having a play to get a look & feel you're really happy with :). Glad you're all sorted out with the photo issue too, that's the main point :).

I have noticed that pictures do take a long time to clear, if at all.
I was using X-plore and there viewer, steaming from my PC.
I'll play with picture settings and if that improves things.

Presumably you mean they take a while to clear from the screen when you close them, (or won't close)?

As above, have you tried another app to determine if it's app specific or universal?

I've used File Commander (premium) for years & while it does what I need, & it has useful features I use a lot, it can also be a little laggy at times on certain devices or subject to the Android version if using the built in photo/video viewer etc.

By clear, I mean show in full Hi-Res.
I haven't really tried much testing/ experimenting.
Will do, thanks for the suggestion. I'll try that too.

With you now, you meant they're taking a while to actually become clear after you try to open them :)!!

Indeed, definitely try another app or apps & try viewing your photos/pictures again as this issue could well be specific to X-plore in this instance. (No need to go mad with anything costly or special for this task. There are plenty of free apps available in the Play Store for this very purpose that will only take a few seconds to download & install, (or to uninstall if they're not quite to your liking or you come across something you like more.))

Any quality photo viewer or even a multimedia app such as Kodi should display all of your photos very quickly, & at their full native resolution.

Let us know if you're still experiencing problems, or even if you'd like to give an update of an app you try that functions more as you'd expect/prefer that may help other members in the future as well :).
