Hello All

I'm after some advice please (I don't want to have tons of external bulky hdd's cluttering up my room anymore) so i'm looking at NAS for my needs and internal hdds are smaller and can be neatly packed away for future use, rinse and repeat action :)

First time ever considering buying a NAS and i've already got myself pointed at the

Asustor AS1002T V2 2 Bay Diskless Desktop NAS Dual Core 1.6GHz CPU 512MB RAM
Seagate ST6000VN001 6TB IronWolf 3.5" 5400RPM SATA NAS Hard Drive
Ugreen 10370 1M USB 3.0 A to USB 3.0 A M/M Cable - Black (Which i assume is the correct plug i need to plug the NAS to the minix Neo u9-H media player to work)

My question is, will this work compared to how i have been doing it using Seagate external Hdds 5TB/6TB plugged into it and then using Kodi to watch my anime/movies/tv etc

I never used a NAS before and well i'm after some guidance :)

regards,

NAS is the way to go but Im not so sure you have grasped that the NAS is not plugged into the minx u9 at all, but rather is attached to your router and then accessed using Kodi on the minix over your Lan using SMB or NFS etc.

I personaly use a WD My Cloud Home 4TB , and whilst this may not be a true "NAS" in the strictest sense it does exactly what i have described ( and what you have described you need) and its "Public" folder is easily accesible over the LAN using SMB protocol in Kodi. It works just great and I have never had any issues streaming large and high bit rate files. In my opinion it is a good value for money option.

Others will no doubt point you to Synology, which again is a very good option, for the more "serious" NAS users.

Ohh i see so i can't use the NAS like i do now with the external hdds ?

That's handy to know

Another option is a JBOD enclosure.
With this you can have multiple drives in one enclosure connected directly to your device.

Also if your router has a USB port(s) it can be connected there and shared across your network with more than one device

Personally I favour a dedicated NAS.

Most Nas have USB ports and allow you to add space to your "own cloud".

How to setup a Synology NAS Part 19: Increase storage capacity with an External Hard Drive

Update

I've decided to go with the Synology DS220j 2-Bay Diskless brand (just need to order) and the hdds i need

And use the minix neo u9-h over wifi/lan to watch via the NAS :)

Any useful tips on how i can go about this or is it straight easy :)

Synology support is excellent !
You can find so many tutos and howto on youtube ...

What do you want to do ? Having more space or having security ?
For more security at the begining choose either SHR or Raid 1
For more space choose either Raid 0 (faster but if you loose one HDD you loose all datas) or Basic (2 HDD separated).

Honestly, if you can push for the extra cash save yourself some serious headaches later & just get a 4 bay instead of the cheaper 2 bay now ;)!! (I started off with a 4 bay & believe me, it wasn't long before it was full & I needed another one anyway lol ;).)

They fill up a hell of a lot faster than you think & as @Skynet has pointed out, if you want some redundancy as well in case you lose a drive, the data can then still be rebuilt from the remaining drive(s) using Synology's SHR/SHR 2 or RAID.

With a 2 bay NAS & redundancy you're straight back down to 1 drive again already which will probably be full immediately just from what you transfer over from your existing HDD's anyway!!

It's very easy to go the cheaper route in the short term when it comes to NAS, but to save yourself the hassle & expense of another NAS (& drives) in another few months, just bite the bullet now.

You can always buy a 4 bay NAS & just start off with 2 drives to populate it for now too if buying everything in one go is too much, then simply add the additional 2 drives to the 4 bay as & when you can then afford them too ;).

Just my 2 cent's worth, entirely up to you :).

Enjoy.
