Seeking solution for playing NTFS or Ex Fat formatted hard drive files on MINIX NEO U9-H Media Hub for Android

Hello, I recently purchased the MINIX NEO U9-H Medi Hub to play videos off an external hard drive on my TV. I found that I could easily connect my NTFS formatted hard drive and find the films to play but when I turned the player back on none of the videos could be located. I may be looking in the wrong place.

Anyway, I contacted MINIX and they suggested Fat32 formatting for external hard drives but that isn't useful as my files and my storage is large (most files are over 5GB and the volumes are at least 4TB).

Does anyone have any solutions? I have been trying forever to find a media player device to connect a hard drive and play films on my TV and they have all proven unsuccessful.

You have 2 good solutions :

- A Nas
- A powered USB hub which won't move from U9-H

Then Kodi would be able to locate your files at the same place.
Thanks for getting back to me on this.

I have my media stored on a NAS Synology disk station. I don't have a smart TV which is why I purchased the minix media hub. Would I be able to stream wirelessly from my diskstation to the U9-H if my TV is in another room?

I was going to move my media off my NAS and put it on external hard drives and plug them into the U9-H which is connected to the TV. If I were to go this way are you saying that I need a powered external hard drive or can I use a powered USB hub to connect my non-powered external drive to the UH-9? Yep, I'm a noob. Wish there were videos showing the best way to do this.

Thanks again for your help.

Yes. You can share over the Wifi. The Nas is connected to your router ans the Nas shares (videos, audio, ...) will be accessible on the same network (Wifi, Ethernet).

Also, do you think if I used a powered usb hub that I could keep my external hard drive formatted to NTFS?
Yes.
U9-H doesen't like moved external drives. A powered USB hub help to keep "fixed reference"

Thanks, I'll see if Synology can help me with the NAS. I'm wanting to set up raid 5 so am in the process of moving everything off the disks and then will put them back on.

Would one like this be suitable? ***edited - Minix rules ***

And is the idea that my non-powered external hard drive connects to this and also to the U9-H? I don't quite understand. Or should I purchase a hard drive that can be powered?

Thanks for the tip. I'll certainly try this. I am wanting to set up raid on my disk station so am in the process of removing everything off one disk so i can do that but then will see if Synology can help me stream content using the minix via kodi or VLC ...

Yes.

When you use an external Hard drive you generaly move it to copy other files in it, and when you reconnect it sometimes the HD reference is moved and Kodi is lost (can't find the share).
If you don't use Kodi then it should work (VLC, MX player, ...)

The best way remains a NAS.

As @Skynet has advised playing media from your NAS with Kodi is the best option.
In Kodi you need to add your NAS as a source for your video library >> google search Kodi media libary and check out the Kodi wiki for loads of info

Sounds like Nas is the way to go. Thanks again for the help.

Would you happen to know whether KODI is as flexible as VLC with playing file types? I guess I'll know soon enough anyway.

DS = Disk Station

I use DS File, DS Video & DS Get.
Ah! That makes sense. :)

Thanks Villa. A Minix rep recently said that MINIX NEO U9-H supports NTFS (and FAT32), which is good to know as my harddrives are ntfs format, but the rep also said that Minix only guarantee support for external storage devices up to 2.5TB storage capacity. I'm guessing NAS is the way around that obstacle, ie, my NAS will have at least 10TB of content. Just confirming that there won't be a storage capacity limit with NAS.

Yes, thats correct, shouldn't be a problem with size of NAS.
You may find that the first time you connect and load all your media files into Kodi's media library it may take some time to scan and collect all the artwork...once done it is cached, so much quicker the next time you view your library.
