Small Picture on TV Screen

Hi Folks.
My friend has a Minix U9 box which has been working fine. When he switched it on today the box lit up perfectly. but the picture is only a small picture in the center of the screen. He called me as I have the same box and I walked him through the settings, restarted the box, changed the power supply checked the input by changing to a different one, but eventually ran out of ideas. He asked if he should buy a new box, but I said I would try asking the experts first. He knows nothing except to turn on and watch. I installed all the files and apps for him. He lives about 500 km from me so I can only help by phone.
Is there anything he or I can do before buying a new one?
Thank you,
Popajoe44.

Apart from the small picture you refer to, does everything work well? do all apps function as they should .. and with regard to the small picture what % of the screen does it cover? I guess I am asking is it visible enough to navigate easily?

What you can do:
1-test with another TV and with another HDMI cable.
Check your screen resolution (and if the device is in auto switch to best resolution)
2-if the problem continues (point number one checked) try factory reset U9-H (be aware that you will lose data and settings).
3-if the problem continues (first and second points checked) please send an email to:
support@minix.com.hk

Is this problem app specific or it's doing it everywhere including the metro (home screen) launcher?

Otherwise, if you haven't already resolved this issue with your oppo from the advice previously posted above?......

Additionally, check the U9-H settings ->
Display ->
Screen position ->

Two options available there to zoom in screen or zoom out screen. Ensure the scaling hasn't been inadvertently reduced down to 80% or it will significantly reduce the size of the image to the centre of the display. (Ideally it should just be set to the default 100%, but the option is obviously there for end users to adjust as required.)

It's highly unlikely it'll have any bearing, but for your additional information just in case.....

...Albeit, it shouldn't be anywhere near as drastic as you seem to be describing; any half decent FHD/UHD TV usually has their own settings for screen scaling or HDMI overscan which could potentially have a similar effect depending on certain circumstances or variables. The actual naming varies from one TV manufacturer to another (in their infinite wisdom), but you're essentially looking for a setting called 16:9 overscan or similar, or any settings related to the aspect ratio or scaling.

Typically overscan settings are best left DISABLED anyway to display the image in its original size & it should fit the screen normally. However, in some cases the image may not always reach the edges of the display which is why this setting is also available for subjective requirements. (Again, double check to ensure it isn't a factor that could be affecting your buddies hardware if inadvertently enabled in this instance.)

Keep us posted how you get on :).

I recently heard from my friend who had a problem with the picture being very small. His friend where he lives came to visit and he told him about his problem. His friend checked the Minix and found no problem. He then asked my friend to give him the remote for the Samsung TV . he found the adjustment for the input being used was set to a small setting and when he reset it all is now well. I guess my friend was assuming that it had to be the Minix. He is a geologist and is very educated but knows nothing about electronics. Thank you guys for your concern in this matter. It was difficult for me as I had to forward to him your advice over the phone. Keep up the good work, maybe he should join the Minix Forum.

Not a problem & glad your friend's friend is sorted :).

Invariably issues like this usually come down to a setting that was inadvertently changed or incorrect use.

All good :).
