[SOLVED] No app icon... even in the tray!

I side loaded an app called ABC iView, it is a free streaming app for our national broadcaster down here in Oz. It works fine BUT I have to dig into the setup menus to find the app and launch it. No desktop icon and no tray icon! I've tried several launchers and no change... I've uninstalled and reinstalled on all launchers etc.

Anyone got a clue?

Can I manually create an App Icon?

I never had this issue before.

Thanks in advance.

What happens if you go to the menu and click and hold the icon? You should be able to drag the shortcut to the home screen then.

It means the app is installing as a system app for some reason. You could try creating a shortcut with this:

Edit: curious as to why you have sideloaded, does it not show in the Playstore for the U22?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.net.abc.iview&hl=en_US&referrer=utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=abc+iview&pcampaignid=APPU_1_TH55X67UGYm3kwXqoqyYAg

Edit2: I am able to install it via Playstore on my U22 and the app icon is visible under all apps on the Minix Metro.

Final Edit : It can only be that you are sideloading the Android TV version which in turn is installing as a system app.

My findings:
There appears to be two versions in the Play Store, ABC iview and ABC Australia iview.

This is how they appear for me in Spain

I sideloaded ABC iview v4.12.1 and no icon is visible.

From the Play Store I installed ABC Australia iview, icon is visible. Also now, so is ABC iview.

Perversely the ABC Australia iView app is the International version with a lot less content than the full version just called ABC iView.

Sounds like the OP was either installing an Android TV version (I get the result described if I install the Leanback version of Pluto TV) or it is a quirk of the stock launcher. I use the Square Home launcher on my devices and have no problem with the ABC iView app.

I thought the same!

I did install Android TV version too but I began to get confused with which version was which as there was some conflict.

Anyway I have since removed ABC iview and installed ABC iview (Android TV) and the icon does not appear.
The app does show up in Settings Apps.

@Zed you will have to try @Marty's suggestion...

....or try @Johno100's suggestion, Square Home launcher.

The Android TV version does install as a user installed app not a system app.
My guess is the icon does not show up due to Leanback intent.

The clue usually is when you install the app and the open button on the install page is greyed out.

If the OP does want to persist with the Android TV version (which I don't recommend) then using an app like QuickShortcutMaker, available from the Play Store, will allow you to make a working shortcut to the app even if the app is not visable in applications.

It worked for me, I tried it earlier with the Android TV version of ABC iView.
Nope not for me! It fails to create a shortcut.

QuickShortcutMaker app apears to do nothing!

Edit: It appears you first have to create a widget.

OK thanks, I will have a look.

That is interesting, I don't get iView listed at all and I get this when I use my PC.

I guess that it is possible that I have picked up the TV app by mistake. I will look for another version and try that.

Thanks.

OK...

I found another version, slightly older than the one I had but it was marked as a full Android version. It has installed fully with Icons and seems to be working well... despite what PlayStore thinks!

So it looks like I picked up the AndriodTV apk.

Thanks, I will be more vigilant in the future!

You lost me right there! :)
Leanback Launcher is what Android TV uses.
An app designed for Android TV will have Leanback intent.
Sometimes this affects the installation or the functioning of the app in Pure Android.
On this occasion the icon does not show but the app does appear to function correctly.

"Leanback is understood as “leaning back in your chair” to watch any content on your HDTV. Unlike a computer, you’re not leaning over a keyboard. You’re leaning back in your lounge, relaxing with a remote in your hand."

I have to say the the full android app is delivering crap video quality. I might reload the TV app and compare.
