Update hell...

My MINIX Z83-4 Pro was nagging me to update.
Using up all my disk space.
I tried the update using a USB HDD.
Still no luck failing with an error code.
Then I came to this form and saw advice on using Intel Driver assistant tool.
That updated the display driver.
The next time the windows update ran the MINIX box would no longer boot.

I prepared a USB stick with 1809 firmware update.
Eventually that worked.
Then I spent several hours re-loading all the programs I use on the MINIX.
Re-Booted several times.
All looked good.
I thought that took a long time, but at least I had a clean system with more Disk space available.

BUT then I rebooted with a message about applying updates and the MINIX will not boot up anymore.

Please tell me I don't have to go through all this again ?

What did I do wrong ?

Do i understand that it was a brand new device? If so, yes, there are several updates available and it takes a couple of hour to update everything.

I got the idea that your device went cuckoo.
If it does not boot anymore, you have to create a bootable windows 10 pro usb-disk, and reinstall windows.
otherwise a win 10 home disk with a license.

The box is about a year old.

I followed the instructions.

I just did it again.
Used the USB stick to re-load 1809
Did the setup.
Entered my microsoft account to authenticate the install.
System info reports the system as z83-4 plus even though I downloded the pro image.
Defender and cumulative updates started downloading.
Reset after first batch had downloaded.
All ok.
One more cumulative update downloaded.
Restarted after it was ready.
The Minix box will no longer boot.

This time I did not download any of the other applications that I use.

After 3 attempts to boot, I get a repair tool menu.
But, I don’t know what to do.
There are no system restore points.
Startup repair says an upgrade is pending and can’t fix anything.

Are you unplugging the USB flash drive after Win 1809 has installed?

Have you also checked the boot order in the BIOS? Double check that the onboard eMMC is the primary boot device & that it is still listed.

Otherwise, you may have to reinstall Win 1809 fresh again as you just have.

Don't let Windows connect to the internet!! As soon as it has installed & Win 10 boots, enter the advanced settings in Windows update & ensure that the feature updates are deferred for 365 days. (Leave the routine/critical updates enabled as normal.)

See if that helps in this instance.

Keep us apprised :).

This little program seems to do the trick >> https://www.novirusthanks.org/products/win-update-stop/

using it on my N42-C

The initial problem still remains, either install the app or quickly defer the updates from Win 10 Pro before it can update. (If this is actually part of the problem of course. Won't know until @Nahanni tries it & confirms.)

It's a handy app for Win 10 Home which doesn't allow update deferrals etc. by itself. Win 10 Pro, however, already has the feature to stop updates built into the OS.

Still, whatever the end user is happier using at the end of the day :).

I tried a few things with the repair tool.
After trying to restore, and timing out after 5 minutes, it started to install the update.
It finished and booted.
Windows update then showed all up to date.

I have now deferred updates for 365 days.
