Updating issues from KitKat to Lollipop - X8-H-Plus

I hope someone can give me some tips or checks I can do.

I am trying to upgrade my X8-H-Plus from KitKat 4.4.2 to Lollipop 5.1.1. And although the provided info in threads about USB Burning Tool and Burn Card Maker is clear and perfect, my Minix does not want to be upgrades I guess.

USB Burning Tool:
  1. Downloaded the .img from the USB Burning Tool thread. Even downloads.
  2. Used version 2.0.9 and also one of the newest: 2.1.7.1.
  3. Minix is in shut down state. HDMI, Ethernet etc. is disconnected. Burning tool started, I plug in the USB, Press the restore button, and simultaniously the power button. At some point the blue LED on the Minix is on, but it does not appear in the Burning Tool (.img not yet loaded in the tool, but also when loaded same issue).
  4. Tried Windows 10 and Windows 7 laptop
  5. Connecting USB to laptop while Minix is in normal running state it gets connected and I can copy data from and to the Minix. Not using the cable that came with the Minix.
Burn Card Maker:
  1. Downloaded the file in the Thread
  2. Created the SD according to the instructions with the correct .img
  3. Checked the SD in the Minix while running normally. All content is shown.
  4. After full shut down of the Minix, only Power and HDMI is connected.
  5. I turn on the Minix first pressing the restore button, and while pressing it I also press the power button. The Minix logo appears, I still keep pressing the buttons. And then the Android system recovery <3e> screen appears. No upgrading screen. When selecting "apply update from EXT" nothing is shown after selecting the SD card.
Couple of extra notes. Windows did prompt that the SD needed to be checked, so I let Windows do that, and Fix it. Second: I bought my Minix with pre-installed stuff like KODI with Add-ons and some other things.

I hope someone can give me further suggestions. I am totally lost.

What format is your SD card in? (NTFS, ex-FAT, FAT32?)

Original MINIX cables work best with the burning tool. Try some additional data cables if you can source/borrow some.

Keep us updated :).

SD is formatted FAT32. Already tried multiple USB cables. Only forgot one from my work. Also hope the original cable that came the Minix is still in the box. Have to look it up.

If Windows needed to check or correct possible errors on your SD card (for whatever reason)....

....Try another completely fresh format of your SD card (in FAT32).

Once completed, copy all the necessary files over again & give the process another try ;).

(If Windows throws back the same error checking after this, do you have another SD card you can try too?)

I'm in the same boat, tried the burning tool method and minix box couldn't be detected. I then tries the sdcard method and followed everything. When I come to turn it on I put in the sd card into an sd card reader, I insert it into the minix box and hold the restore button and press power button once. No upgrade screen occurs

Unlucky I don't have another SD card. The checking and correcting did help, as I don't get prompted with the error there where issues with the card. Did a full new format and creation. Still no luck. Also still issues with updating via USB Burning Tool.

@Moe Mac You have to put your SD card directly in the Minix SD card slot as far as I know. The x8-h Plus has the SD card slot on the right side of the OTG micro USB port.

More info about the upgrade over USB. Still no luck, also with trying the original USB cable that came with the Minix (USB to Micro USB). Funny enough the package says the Micro USB to Female USB (which you can't connect to your PC/Laptop directly) "is the" OTG cable. Videos however show the normal USB to Micro USB cable connected. As so did I.

When again watching some Videos I suddenly saw that there are no HUBS lists in the USB Burning tool up front. Also not after loading the .img file. Isn't it so that the tool should show at least one HUB (one line) ? Example in video

After install, before and after .img file load, my tool shows:
USBToolscreen.png

So different then that Video.

What I did before installing this latest version:
* Uninstall older version
* Uninstall of the libusb-win32 WorldCup Device (02/23/2013 1.2.6.0) (which came with the install of the USB Tool)
* Rebooted my laptop
* Disconnected from internet and disabled Virus Scanner. Double checked Windows defender to also be off.
* Installed (Run as admin) USB Tool ver 2.1.7.1. . libusb-win32 WorldCup Device (02/23/2013 1.2.6.0) Also installed success full.
* Started USB Tool, loaded the .img and see screenshot above.
* Using original USB cable, plugged in Laptop (only has USB 2.0). Turned on Minix while pressing Restore button and kept holding it for about 10 secs (also tried way longer). Laptop makes the USB Connect sound, as it does "see" the Minix. But nothing is connected in the USB Burning Tool, most likely because I don't see HUBS in the first place(?) ....

Maybe something else interesting, what could cause this behavior? - The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium - 64bits.

Could it be an issue that the Windows is 64bits? What could otherwise be the cause that the USB Burning tool does not show any HUBI-# lines? I think the issue lays there.

What seemed so easy is now very annoying, and I even know what I am doing. I mean, I also flash Video cards and other stuff.

I hope this new info could trigger someone with more, not yet tried by me, suggestions.

I cant see anything obvious that you are doing wrong in your description.
This is the advice I always give, all of which you seem to be following

make sure the "world cup" driver installed when you installed the Burning Tool, if not uninstall and reinstall, ( if your not sure then uninstall and reinstall anyway and you should get a prompt to install the world cup drivers )
remove any other usb devices and the hdmi cable before trying
make sure that the power is off on the minix ( by removing the power plug, wait 30 secs, plug in the usb cable to minix and pc, and then plug back in the power cable ) and then press and hold the reset button and then the power button for a few seconds or so ( 6-10ish) until you get the connection, (HUB Line) then release both buttons
try different combinations of usb cables and USB2.0 ports...it can be problematic to get a connection
and make sure you have no "security" software that may be blocking the connection
and of course make sure you are using the right firmware image for your device

Only other suggestion is to ensure that when pressing the reset button you can feel the button being depressed
Win 64 bits should work fine

Try try try…
I (too) spend and lost many hours and think without good result… ( The PC with Win 10)
But at least I've just installed with success Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop ) on my Minix NE 8x-H Plus by my old PC with 64 Windows 7!

1. Downloaded X8-H_Plus-Android_5.1-20170612-Burning_Tool zip file from https://files.theminixforum.com/shared/firmwares/X8-H_Plus-Android_5.1-20170612-Burning_Tool.zip).

2. Installed in the PC
a) USB_Burning Tool_v2.0.9 (title v)
b) X8-H_Plus-Android_5.1-20170612-Burning_Tool.img NOT your X8H_PLUS_LOLLIPOP_RC2.img

Some notices:
- No special arrangements with my PC beside unconnecting internet for the moment of upgrading. Normal status.
- No special arrangements with my Minix… No SD card in slot. No uninstalled old original version Android 4.4.2.
- Verify before procedure with control panel that Your computer absolutely must see your Minix NE 8x-H Plus as a part of computer system (next disc / drive). USB / OTG cable and power connected.
- Unplugged power cable for some minutes when the PC see Minix.
- When screen of USB_Burning Tool app. is seen - that is moment to connect power to Minix again.
- Press Restart switch and Power switch together for seconds till see a device onto the screen. That's a main "key" moment.

May be try to install this verion of applications…?

Had same problem. Key is in how you press the keys for the SDcard method. Original instructions make it seem you should hold both. Don't. You press and hold the reset button with the paperclip, but push and release the power button. Holding the power button stops the automatic install. Once I tried it holding just the reset button until the graphic came, ran perfectly.

Trust me, it works. :D

I have followed your instruction and i get the following massage (after 96%)1584103859100.png1584103859100.png

It was some time agao, and I might give it another go.

Spent some time again today, now using my computer. The only thing I did not do was disconnect the internet.

The part what still is off, in my oppinnion, is that the Burning tool does not show the HUB1-x under device. Not when Minix is unplugged, not when it is plugged in. Checked if World Cup device is installed correctly, and it is.

My biggest question: Do you already see a line under device/status etc with a device called HUB1-x? Cause I don't..... :(

Meanwhile I have set my Minix back to factory settings, installed Kodi 16.1 and last working Netflix version for Kitkat 4.4.x. So (for now) TV is working again without Kodi crashing every 10 mins, and Netflix is also up and running again :). Still would like to upgrade to Lollipop though.
