Hi All

Please help me I'm having slight issues with video lag I have upgraded the Ram to 16GB and the drive to a SSD which works well, the problem I'm having is slight video lag.

I have upgraded the display drives and tried to tweak it, but its still not running like my laptop I'm also using the official 4K lead which was an arm and a leg running through my 4K TV.

Any ideas would be very helpful right now as I'm going a little crazy trying to sort this out

Thanks in advanced.

Many thanks

Edward

Please provice some more information:

1 - Is it a 4k video file or are you streaming netflix 4k ?
2 - What is the size of the file (in case of using a file)
3 - Do you run it from a local disk or netwrk drive (in case of using a file)
4 - Do you use wifi or ethernet ?

Hi Edward,

I also run a N42C-4 with a SSD & 16GB RAM without issues. In addition to the info requested by @KAR....

1. Did you install MINIX recommended/compatible RAM & SSD? (Probably yes if the system is otherwise running well, details here, https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/compatible-ssd-and-ram-for-neo-n42c-4.18/ .)

2. When you say you're using an "official cable" that cost you an arm & a leg; Are you talking about an official MINIX HDMI cable or a 3rd party so called "premium" HDMI cable?

3. If you are using HDMI, how long is your cable run?

A decent quality HDMI cable shouldn't cost that much at all, literally £6-7 sterling or your regional equivalent!! Examples of very good affordable HDMI cables here....

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasi...r=8-1-spons&keywords=Amazon+basics+hdmi&psc=1

or

https://www.amazon.co.uk/KabelDirek...F8&qid=1551821326&sr=8-3&keywords=KabelDirekt . (The KabelDirekt cables also come with 90° or 270° connectors if you need them for a wall mounted flat screen.)

4. The stock display drivers shouldn't need updating or adjusting & the drivers issued with MINIX'S Win 10 Pro 1803 image work just fine with zero lag.

5. If playing locally stored files as above, what software are you using for playback?

6. Have you updated to Win 1809? (If yes, rollback to 1803. 1809 seems to have a lot of problems on the N42C-4, including system issues & messing up various drivers.)

Keep us updated :).

Hi all

Many thanks for the reply's.

Here is the info as requested.

1. I have the following parts installed 2 8GB RAM https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VMCUAIM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4k Cable @ 60Mhz

It's normally 1080p files MKV I use which have never been a problem on my laptop, file size is round about 8GB anything up to 40GB.

The files i download are straight to the SSD drive so I can’t see that being a problem, also connected to WiFi I tend not to stream things.

Currently I’m using K-Lite codec and also MPC player x64 to play the videos but there is still slight lag, I have tried VLC player and different codec packs if that’s any help.

Also I have noticed that the Intel Graphics Control panel when I click on it, it starts to load then nothing thought it may have to do with some settings there.

Last but not least I’m using build 1803

Any info would be really helpful as I bought this so my misses would stop pinching my laptop.

Kind Regards

Edward

Hi Kar

Thanks for the reply.

I’m trying to find some codec with that format in there [HEVC], Klite has it in the mega pack which I have just installed.

But it’s still not right.

Kind Regards

from my brief reading of this it seems you are using a usb-c -4K cable.
Why are you not using a standard high speed HDMI cable...perhaps that may be a possible cause ?

You should also try using VLC as your player as i dont belive you then need to worry about K-lite codec packs and the like ..

Hi still trying to sort this issue out.

I have found this in the windows store https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/life...c-files-in-windows-10-for-free-1827094768/amp

Exactly ^^^^^^^ :))!! (However, the HDMI port on the N42C is HDMI 1.4, (maximum 4K@30). The USB-C port with the active HDMI converter allows the full 4K@60 display but it still doesn't support any audio.) Presumably this is why the USB-C -> HDMI converter is a requirement in this instance?

As @pusb87 has suggested, try simply connecting your N42C to your TV using HDMI alone. If your lag then immediately disappears or significantly improves, you'll be headed in the right direction ;). If it works great :)!!! If not.....

How exactly are you set up Edward? You're clearly sending the visual component of your movies via the USB-C - HDMI converter to your TV. How are you sending the audio component with your 1080p movies? HDMI, optical or 3.5mm jack? Are your movies being routed via any external audio hardware such as an AVR or directly to the TV as well?

If you're mainly viewing 1080p movies anyway, how desperately do you need 4K@60 with a TV?

Otherwise, based on the extensions/plugins you're installing you also appear to be watching movies encoded in Apple's version of HEVC h.265, (HEIF/HEIC). This isn't exactly ideal & it could also be a potential bottleneck, but see how things go after trying what @pusb87 has suggested, the files may play more smoothly.

Also consider other programs you have running on your N42C whilst you're watching your movies, & are they resource intensive? How large is your HEIC/HEIF movie collection? (It may be worthwhile converting them to a format Windows can natively support.)

Let us know how you get on :).
