Where (logically, not physically) is my optical output?

Hi all, I've been a happy J50C-8SE user for 6 months but have suddenly hit a problem and hope you can help.

Executive Summary: How do I find (I mean logically; I know where the port is!) the system's optical output and get it working again?

Long form: My J50C-8SE (Jbox) runs the Idagio app to stream music to my stereo amplifier. I control the Jbox over Wi-Fi using RDP on an Android tablet . Since I set the Jbox up it worked flawlessly until last night, when it became unreachable. I plugged a USB keyboard in and performed a <Ctrl><Alt><Del> reboot.

There may have been a glitch in the home Wi-Fi, but that is now working normally again (without any intervention).

The flow of data and music is supposed to be like this: the Idagio app connects to Idagio's streaming server, receives the stream and outputs the stream (without any conversion) to an optical input on the amplifier. The amp does the D-A conversion and sends the analogue audio signal to the speakers.

Since last evening, I can't get any output to the amplifier. Instead, the Jbox plays its music through the tablet's speakers. Logged into the Jbox remotely now (Remmina remote desktop client via RDP), looking in Windows 'Sound' settings there are no audio devices. Looking in the Realtek HD Audio Manager I find "You are seeing a blank page because there is no audio devices plugged in the system. To activate GUI, please plug an audio device in the system." On the right hand side of the Realtek window I see "ANALOG Back Panel" and green and red icons, then "DIGITAL" and a square black icon.

I am not familiar with the details of Windows (I haven't used it as my main OS for over 20 years). Can you suggest a plan for troubleshooting the problem? (I have made sure the SPDIF cable is firmly seated all the way in the jack in the Jbox, is running to the correct port on the amplifier and is securely seated there too.)
