xubuntu 18.04

kar, thanks for posting the wifi configuration file. saved the day, wifi-wise. (y)

i wanted to install xubuntu on my Z83-4 (2016 vintage) to free myself of windows 10. before i did anything else i updated the firmware to V1.8, following the directions on the forum. i also ran nirsoft's productkey software to capture the OEM license code for my Windows 10 OS, just in case.

then i followed the standard linux install procedure of making a boot USB stick, etc and testing xubuntu live before installing. i did a clean install. my first boot showed the splash screen then the BSOD, so i rebooted into the recovery image to watch what was happening. the boot process stuck right after the message [OK] reached target sound card and after waiting three or four minutes, I tried what I always try... ctl-c. The process restarted and I got to the login screen. YMMV. I have no idea why it stopped there or why ctl-c got the process going again. at that point, i got wifi working using kar's configuration file (above) and rebooted again. this time the boot process was successful and i have a working system.

one note: i didn't have wifi access during the install process so i had to run the update cycle manually after logging in. don't skip this step or you will miss security upgrades!

at this point i have xubuntu 18.04 running and i know that HDMI, bluetooth, wifi, usb all work. sound doesn't work but i haven't looked into it yet (i will post on that in a bit). i also haven't tried a wired ethernet but will later tonight.

For now:

Sound working
WiFi working
4k display working
Blue-tooth working

Anyway.. nothing found that's not working :)

Installation iso can be downloaded from : https://xubuntu.org/release/18-04/

After the install 22 GB free
To enable WIFI do the following:

Download the attached file 4345r6nvram.txt

1 - sudo cp 4345r6nvram.txt /lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt
2 - reboot

Have fun with it!

KAR

KAR - did sound work out of the box for you or did you tweak something to get it going? that's the only thing i haven't figured out yet.

Good question.. think out of the box ( not 100% sure)

okay. i will post something here if/when i figure it out. i have to say i like the minix box a lot better running linux than i ever did with win10.

more notes on xubuntu on this box...

Well, my early elation is tempered. I am seeing intermittent DNS, network interface, and audio failures. Each of these services cycles through working an not working with no apparent rhyme or reason. So far I haven't been able to find a reason for the failures, though I am learning a lot about reading log files...

One note: the failures started after doing an update (not an upgrade), though I am not sure that has anything to do with what's happening.

Hey guys, I have installed Ubuntu 18.04 using the iso file found in the 'firmwares' forum posted by John. I have successfully loaded Ubuntu and it works very good except the wireless is not working. Its not even found in 'Settings', it shows "No Wifi Adapter Found" with a big question mark.

In the upper right corner of the screen it only shows the 'wired' connection with wired setting, no wifi .
When I check with lspci, the wifi chipset does not show either.

I did follow the instructions provided from Kar in this thread. Downloaded the 4345xx.txt file and then copied it using the command he posted. Reboot and still no joy.
I found someone else had a similar problem and they added these 2 lines at the end of the file:
ccode=CN
regrev=38
reboot..
still no wifi..
Not sure what else, I'm fairly new with ubuntu. Any other ideas. Thank you.
