YouTube for Android TV - v2.06.06 U1 Compatible

@CybeRider

The U1 is NOT capable of playing 4K DRM protected content. It needs a fast processor and I believe its chip has to have the code decoding ability. 4K is not the same as 4K HDR. That's why the model doesn't quote that on its specifications. If you want to play 4K HDR content, you need to use a PC with good CPU and GPU or an Android TV Box that clearly states its capable of doing the same. The U1 is what I use on my standard HD 1080p TV because that's really all its capable of.

I'm upgrading to the Shield soon for this very reason. MINIX's prices, IMHO, are today way over priced compared to what's avaible on the market today spec vs price. I think I paid £120 for my U1 and the Shield is roughly £150 these days, it also supports OREO and potentially PIE too. Sometimes you have to accept a products limitations as 4K /4K HDR finds its feet in the streaming market

@Adam Foreman,

Had you just told you never tested the new Youtube TV app with 4k content in your U1 boxes, that would be enough for all of us that have been here discussing 4k possibilities to understand that was not contemplated in your consideration of it "working normal", and that would have been just fine. All that DRM and HDR seems to me displaced. No one is asking from the U1 more than is does, and for me the capabilities that seem to be so interesting for you actually don't mean much to me at the present. My TV has all apps I might need for DRM or/and HDR content, my U9-H does perfectly well with HDR.

You are not well informed about U1 capabilities, as I use mine plenty for 4K VP9 content and it does perfectly well. So I invite you to better test your two units to their full capabilities, but not with your recommended app, which surely doesn't do.

But thanks for posting, as you see it put many of us testing our own machines once again, which is always nice.

The MINIX U1 is not an Android TV Box. The only reason to install the app above is to use the more simplistic GUI than the standard YouTube app. The reason why it doesn't work is because like Netflix and Google, it only considers the following CERTIFIED devices.

Apple TV
Google Chromecast
Roku
Amazon Fire TV
Google Nexus Player

The U1 technically is just a standard tablet rom tweaked to work on the U1. To think that the Android TV app would work on something that isn't a true Android TV certified device is strange to me. In addition, you're shooting the messenger. If you want a more simplistic GUI switch in the standard YouTube, go make a request and explain why you think the GUI switch would benefit other Android TV Boxes that don't have the Android TV OS on it.

If so what is, according to you the reason for that app being pre-installed in all U1 and U9-H, why should anyone install any youtube TV app in any pure Android device?

Give people a chance to be a little more free to choose whatever reason to choose whatever they want. I might have another reason to have a YouTube TV app, and that can simply be because I can.

Anyway, should the Google certification be the reason, how would you explain it working fine in the U9-H?

Ah... Difficult questions and difficult answers... Don't we all have them? As I said above in answering someone else, I am not very free to speculate. And besides you were the one saying that app was doing normal for the U1 (am I going crazy?) :ROFLMAO:

No I didn't, I said it was compatible after several versions of the app failed to install, even on Android based TV's not just boxes. The one packaged with the U1 was useless compared to the full version. After a lot of feedback from the community, they changed the way the app works. Now they can change things at a server level rather than just the app level, meaning less development and less updates being pushed out via the play store or the TV store. Android TV OS is a separate OS completely. The U1 does not use that. This app therefore is going to be very limited in its usage. The other thing to realise that the U1 all being 64bit in name, can't run the 64bit version of the app. Again, more likely to be a red flag to YouTube, Netflix, Amazon etc etc that the box is not certified and not a true Android TV Box with the official OS installed. DRM is there to stop theft of these apps from piracy. Using strict rules means that this is largely reduced but not entirely as clearly the scene continues to pump out releases from those pay per view services. If you're not happy with the Android TV version of YouTube not working on the U1, speak to MINIX, Google/YouTube etc. That's the ONLY way this is going to fix your issue. However, the U1 is way too old now to even bother with. There are tons of Android TV Boxes out now with 4gb ram, 32/64gb storage, true 64bit processors that have a minimum of Nougat as there OS. Technology moves on, the U1 is old... Time to purchase a new box which looking at Amazon right now has these very specs for half the price of the U1

@Adam Foreman,
1 - The title and first post of the thread is yours.
2 - The title tricks users into believing the app is U1 fully compatible.
3 - The app is in fact compatible with U1 up to 1080p.
4 - You are wrong about my issues with the app. I don't use it, just tested it. It is not good nor better than the ones I have for my own purposes.
5 - You are wrong about thinking I have some kind of interest in fighting you personally in this battle. When all I have is gratitude for your support in other questions, and even in this one up to the 1080p that you tested and that is probably useful to other users but not for the ones looking for 4k compatibility.
6 - I only got to this debate to make it clear to everybody that this app is not 4k compatible for the U1 anymore, and only after this question came up. Many previous versions were, not the preinstalled one.
7 - I never had a single problem installing the versions I tested of the app to my U1.
8 - I reinforce that I am not open to debate the arguments you are coming across in your mind to twist all the clear arguments that this app is not as good as others for the U1, especially in what 4k playing is concerned, as your title could initially suggest.

Thank you for the chance you gave us to try it, so we could get informed, and inform others that there are issues regarding 4k compatibility in this version for the U1, but it does great for the U9-H, as I stated, and as it is so far tested.

I don't know for how long you wish to extend this discussion but I will remain as long as you need me to reassure you there is nothing personal against you involved here. And I will very likely defeat your invented arguments, such as the certification one, for as long as I can as those are absolutely false.

Thank you for your efforts anyway.

Long story short
As confirmed with the Playstore and support.google.com community, Google ceased supporting this app on Android 5 and that is simply why it is no longer compatible with Lollipop devices since March 2019.

The version provided with the U1, is it not good?
The regular YouTube app from the Playstore is it not good?

What are you trying to achieve from YouTube that those two can't handle?

The version provided with the U1 in search button dosnt rememder my search history. I have to write what i want every single time. The 14.25.57 that is also provider with the U1, every 5 minutes stops and plays advertisements. Now i install the Smart Youtube and i think that is much better.

I see!

I had quit that one several months ago, but now I am well impressed with this new version. Glad you mentioned it! :)

How can i install this on the minix? its not on the playstore and I am unsure of how to get access otherwise. I used to have it on there but then i got a message that it was no longer compatable so i uninstalled it thinking i could install a new version but there was no new version to be found.

i should also mention i want the youtube for android tv. the regular youtube is useless with the regular minux U1 remote.

If you mean Smartyoutube TV it can be found here:
https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/#releases-section

You'll have to go into Settings, Security, Unknown Sources and slide the little virtual button to the right to allow installing apps from outside the Playstore. (Don't forget to go back there and put it back as it was once you are done with the installation).

Go to the link above and download the stable release. Install it.

As mentioned before, Youtube for Android TV is no longer supported for Android 5 and therefore you won't find it at the Playstore to install for the U1 from there.
You can find former versions at:
https://www.apkmirror.com
which is a legal place to download apps from. Follow the instructions I gave you in the post above in case you wish to try any previous versions that might suit you.

The regular remote really limits a lot in such a versatile box. But I am sure you already know that. Please don't read a criticise here, as I am sure you have your reasons to use it. It's just there is not much to say about overriding its obvious limitations.

Yes, it is the same as you do in a computer. If you are using the Metro launcher (the starting page with the large green and grey squares with icons) when you select the large square with an icon representing a globe, you will likelly find the shortcut to bring up Google Chrome. Or you can select the button on the right side reading "All Apps" and look for Chrome in there.

thanks. i got the youtube for android tv installed but for some reason there are no buttons on the left hand side. no search, account, etc. i am baffled...

maybe the smart youtube is the better option. i just need to be able to use it with the standard remote.

I said it above, there is not much to say about the standard remote limitations.

However please keep in mind that (since you don't wish to have the mostly recommended air mose solution) you can connect a regular computer mose to a USB socket in the Minix so you will have an excellent and cheap pointing device.
