Booting from an external SSD drive

Hi,
I'm looking to move Windows 10 OS install to a larger external SSD drive. In preparation, I've installed the latest firmware listed here and also updated the BIOS to 1.8. I've attached a Samsung 250GB T5 portable ssd drive, created an image of the C: drive with the Samsung data migration tool but when I go to boot from that drive, I get an error that there is no bootable media or that there were issues starting from the drive and to explore recovery options.

Is booting from this drive supported with the latest firmware and BIOS? If so, what else could be going wrong here?

Thanks,
Fred

Is the external formatted as a bootable drive? Via Rufus for example.

I'm currently giving this a go to see how I fair!

I'm going to use Macrium Reflect though to clone the eMMC to the HDD.

Will report back soon.

1. Its plugged into the USB3.0 port (blue one)
2. I didnt format with Rufus but did format as an NTFS drive then used the samsung tool. My understanding is that the tool does that for you since its typically used when you get a new drive and you want to move your system to it. (theres multiple youtube videos for it showing it clonging the drive then booting with it).
3. Mobile-ssd install OS is *OFF*...will flip on and try again.

Just so I'm clear what the mobile-ssd setting does, should I set this on then run the firmware install from the top...this would allow it to install directly to the SSD? Also, should I disable the "SCC eMMC support" option at the same time?

what the mobile-ssd setting does
No idea! :ROFLMAO:

I've tried it Enabled and Disabled.

Also I've been messing with Boot order but nothing is obvious!

I've been able to boot from the HDD but it's in a loop and never gets to the desktop.
Keeps saying Prepairing Automatic Repair, then Diagnosing your PC and returns to Troubleshoot screen.

Yes.

No dice. Here's what I did:
1. While in Windows, plugged in the WINPE thumb drive with the new firmware. Reformatted the SSD drive as NTFS to wipe it for the new install.
2. Rebooted into the BIOS, changed the boot order to start with the thumb drive, turned off "SCC eMMC", turned on "mobile-ssd install os"
3. Rebooted to start the install process.
4. Bombed:

Is there a way to run the above in 'debug' mode so it outputs more useful information about the error? Also, is there a list of SSD's that are supported that I can compare mine against?

I ended up selecting Reset this PC and it now boots to desktop.

Went in to BIOS and enabled the eMMC.
Rebooted and it still booted from the HDD.
HDD C: and eMMC D: (y)

Now I'm going to do it all again to see if I can find out what was up with the HDD image! ;)

Actually I have a Crucial MX500 1000GB lying around. I will try that!

I will use Acronis True Image to clone the eMMC.

Nah, that's doing the same thing...

I selected to start in Safe Mode and it boots to desktop!

Looks like the only way to sort this is to select Reset this PC.

What are the steps for this? I found the option for "Reset this PC" in Windows under troubleshooting, should I proceed with these steps?:
1. clone the emmc drive to the SSD drive and plug it into the USB3 port - or - plug in the thumb drive with the firmware used to reinstall
2. disable the eMMC option in BIOS
3. proceed with reset this PC?
