Can't get passthrough to work

I've got the U9-H connected to a Yamaha AVR. The two are connected via HDMI, I've set the sound options to passthrough but the AVR is only seeing PCM 2.0
DVD player and PVR also connected to AVR and with those the AVR sees various sound formats (DD 5.1, DTS etc)
Have tried youtube, Kodi and Amazon prime all running on U9-H and the output from the U9-H seems stuck on outputting stereo 2.0. Have power cycled U9-H and AVR, unplugged and reconnected HDMI cable.

Any advice please?

in minix settings set Digital Sounds to HDMI

The follow this guide for Kodi settings >> https://kodi.wiki/view/Audio_quickstart_guide

set your kodi settings to expert and post screenshots all your minix and kodi audio settings here and we can take a look

also what kodi version are you using
and what are the decoding abilites of your AVR amp

Will do.
I've not been testing through Kodi as my main source was Amazon Prime and then other tests of youtube - I just read online that youtube doesn't output 5.1 so was doomed to failure. Have asked Amazon what they stream video at (I'd have thought for 4K it should have decent sound but will see.....)

Downloaded from dolby a test video and that played back ok, with 5.1 surround (not even via Kodi).

It must be Amazon Prime Video app that is the problem.

Easier to take a photo than work with remote controlled minix

You've already sussed Youtube ;). Amazon Prime Video/Netflix are limited to SD on the U9-H so they'll also be limited to 2.0 audio too.

Test the 5.1 file you downloaded in Kodi, it's probably working fine ;).

Invariably issues like this are down to source restrictions or source files if everything else is already correctly configured ;).

It's not the same as a true surround source obviously, but if your AVR has the option you could try manually setting it to "Dolby Surround" or "Neural-X". It'll up-mix 2.0 stereo sources to your speaker configuration & it might correctly send vocals to the centre channel too ;).

Set up Kodi like this & it'll work perfectly, (use the column on the far right) ;)....

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

It is so gutting that it's only in SD!!! You think you've got some fairly new and high performance hardware and then it doesn't perform.

I use the Yamaha AVR Dolby ProLogicIIx decoder that sends the sound to all 7.1 speakers but being a slight purest I wanted to maximize the quality of everything.

Do you know why Amazon Prime and Netflix are limited to SD on the U9-H? I've got a smart TV in the snug with UHD but it has just the native speakers and I'd never watch a film or box-set on it as the sound is rubbish.

are you sure...i thought it was at least HD (720P)

i think resolution is limited due to licensing

pleased to say you have it mainly sorted now for your true multi audio channel video

its generally considered that Kodi (18) is one of the best and most versatile media players

Yes, thanks to everyone for the replies. Turns out there was nothing incorrect all along, just a stereo source all along and some confusing labelling and marketing (youtube and Amazon).
