DTS Audio

What video player are you using?

DTS works fine for me in VLC, the pre-installed movie player and of course KODI.

I assume you have DTS selected in Settings => Device Preferences => Sound ?

Thanks for the response. I've tested with VLC and KODI, and I have DTS selected in settings, but it doesn't work

Which firmware version is your U22 running to begin with?

Is the audio you're having issues with definitely lossy DTS, & not DTS-HD? (Some users have reported getting no audio passthrough at all with DTS-HD regardless, while others are still able to passthrough the lossy DTS core audio to their external audio hardware. While for the most part nearly all of the DTS-HD encoded files I tested with the U22 & the official MINIX firmware successfully passed through to my AVR as lossy DTS, I have come across a small handful of files that won't work via passthrough at all.)

DTS-HD (& Dolby TrueHD) audio passthrough aren't currently supported by the U22 with the official firmware. (Hopefully this will be fixed in time.) The best alternative right now is CoreELEC & you can easily configure the U22 to dual boot to Android, or CoreELEC from a Micro SD card as required.

Otherwise, it could be specifically caused by your passthrough configuration or hardware. (What is your external audio hardware or are you using a TV to passthrough to a soundbar etc.? How is it all connected too, i.e. HDMI or TOSLINK?)

Have you also tested more than one DTS encoded file or downloaded some free DTS test videos to make sure it's not your source media?

Thanks for the response. External audio hardware is an Onkyo equalizer, connected with HDMI or TOSLINK. I'll try some DTS tests videos. The point is that I wouldn't want to use Coreelec because it's a little bit messy, I gifted U22-XJ to my 70 year OLD father, and I think it would be a problem for him to learn a new OS and configure it would be a problem for me. I can't believe that our cutting edge device is not able to play this kind of videos, but my 2009's wd tv live is.

What do you mean that CoreElec is a little messy? Have you actually tried it? Personally I find CoreElec far simpler than android, which is certainly very messy. Configuring CoreElec is much simpler than configuring android. CoreElec also works much better than android in that it has far fewer playback issues and bugs. I run CoreElec internally (ie: I have replaced the android OS with CoreElec) on all my Minix boxes.

The only real downside of CoreElec is that you cannot load android apps. If you need to run android apps you can leave android on the box and run CoreElec from an SD card. To switch to android remove the SD card. To return to CoreElec, insert the SD card. Pretty simple, also a great way to evaluate CoreElec.

Thank you, I'll give it a chance.

actually you dont need to remove the sd card to get into android os.
When you select power off in coreelec (in its standard skin) it should give you an option to boot into android.

If you use an alternative skin that option may not be available, but you can add your own command as a sub menu item.

You're welcome :).

First you need to determine specifically how his external audio hardware is actually connected as well, as you don't seem to be too sure. HDMI or TOSLINK? Once determined, you'll need to adjust the audio output settings for the device accordingly either to HDMI, or SPDIF for TOSLINK.

Issues this basic are frequently caused by something that's been overlooked with the initial configuration of the device ;).

You didn't confirm which firmware version your/your father's U22 is running either? (Ideally you want to update the U22 to at least FW005 using the FOTA app that's available on the U22, but the U22 is now up to FW006.)

CoreELEC certainly isn't messy as has already been explained above, it's the very definition of simple. It boots & automatically runs just one user app alone, "Kodi". (In a way, CoreELEC makes a device like the U22 as simple to use as a WD HDTV Live & all the average basic user needs to know is how to use Kodi itself. There's nothing to learn for most & the average user could use CoreELEC indefinitely without ever needing anything but Kodi. (There are advanced options available for those with the knowledge or who like to delve deeper but those options are all hidden & can only be accessed via secure command line from an external device.)

I used to use WD HDTV Live media players years ago myself, yes they were (are) awesome devices & incredibly simple to use indeed. If your father can operate one or Kodi, he's already set with the required knowledge :).

There's a simple installation tutorial here that a chimpanzee could quite literally follow :).... https://theminixforum.com/index.php?threads/tutorial-coreelec-on-the-u22.3368/

Hi! I've installed Coreelec and I've connected U22-XJ to the equalizer via HDMI and U22 firmware FW006.

I've tested several video files in Coreelec, and now I can play dolby digital, but I'm still unable to play DTS. Actually I can play DTS, but with flat audio. Besides, the equalizer appears as if there is no digital audio. I play the same file in WD HDTV and the equalizer tells that is DTS audio. It's like the Minix converts digital audio to flat audio in order I can listen it.

I'm getting crazy! o_O

you can be assured that U22 + Coreelec does handle and play fine HD Audio, DTS, DD+, Atmos etc.
Just a matter of what your external devices can handle, how you are connected and getting the audio configuration right in Coreelec audio settings.

Make sure you are in "Expert" mode in Corelec settings menu to see all the options !

OK, so technically it is working, it's just not yet operating 100% to what you're used to with another device. That being the case, you're probably missing something in Kodi's configuration or you're using an incorrect setting somewhere!!! Or, you're missing something with the capability of your audio hardware.

How many channels can your hardware support? (I.e. is it stereo only or can it definitely decode 5.1 surround? For that matter, what is the specific make & model of your audio hardware so we can double check connectivity?)

In CoreELEC, have you set the audio output device to ALSA: AML-AUGESOUND, HDMI if your U22 is connected via HDMI alone? (If it's connected via TOSLINK you'll need to choose the S/PDIF ootion instead.)

Have you also set the actual passthrough output device to the same option as well?

You still didn't seem at all certain before regarding the use of HDMI or TOSLINK, & you never did specifically confirm which option you require for the U22!!! (Presumably you required TOSLINK to output audio from the older WD HDTV but with the U22 you don't need a separate TOSLINK cable anymore?)

Ensure the stereo upmix option is disabled in Kodi's audio settings or that may also affect normal audio passthrough.

If you've incorrectly enabled the "sync playback to display" option then disable it as that too will affect audio passthrough & the U22 will decode the audio instead, which will obviously affect your usual audio quality.

In the audio passthrough options themselves you haven't selected the DD/AC3 "transcoding" option by mistake have you? (If yes, disable it but leave all other audio passthrough options enabled for the audio formats your audio hardware definitely supports! (Equaliser???).)

Otherwise, take your time to double check all available settings as such issues are invariably caused by something a user is overlooking or changed incorrectly if your audio hardware definitely supports the audio formats you require.
