HBOGo and Kodi issues

Hi all,

I just bought U9-H. I have few questions...

- HBO Go I cannot get surround sound out. My configuration is
- Minix stock FW
- Philips TV connected with optical and HDMI to my Yamaha AVR
- Minix connected to AVR via HDMI (would it be better to use Toslink cable)
- Sound settings on Minix set to HDMI
- In Kodi with passtrough I get DTS, 5.1 without any problem.
Also in HBO Go I need to login almost every time after I suspend Minix (not full power off).

- Kodi 18.5 problems with some tv shows. Video runs ok for 9 - 18 minutes than it starts to speed up for few seconds than slows down (like slow motion) and audio is out of sync. If I stop video and resume than it's ok for another 10 minutes (pausing and resuming doesn't help). I tried a movie in 1080p with DTS played it for 45 minutes without any issue. TV show is AVI file. I must mention that same show played without any issue with my old MeCool M8S+ box with same Kodi version.
I'm playing it from my NAS and Minix is connected with ethernet cable (not using WiFi). So nothing changed in configuration except media box. Kodi is configured identically as on MeCool.

Thank you in advance.

Hi.
I don't use amp (just tv speakers) and hbo, i will not comment on that.

Kodi :
First restart all devices: (before doing other things)
-router, u9h and maybe amp.

Uninstall/disable all apps that you don't need.

You are using a good configuration:
Nas and ethernet (i think you are using a gigabit connection)

For better you can think in the future using a kodi NAS server with SQL (if your NAS allow) :

Also use NFS protocol if you can, instead of SMB, i notice that NFS is faster.
Use static ip (for your u9h and NAS for example) on your router if you can.

HBO Go app - You may well need to speak to the app's developers regarding these issues especially if you're able to receive 5.1 surround to your AVR normally through other apps such as Kodi! (Reviews for the app frequently complain of the same problem, or the app failing to remember resume points, watched status, etc.)

If your AVR & TV (& cabling) fully support HDMI ARC/e-ARC, then having a TOSLINK cable between them as well is essentially redundant.

Although, you could certainly try reconfiguring the U9-H to use SPDIF/TOSLINK instead of HDMI to see if you then get lossy 5.1 surround from the HBO Go app. (Obviously this would at least tell you if the HBO Go app has a problem with surround audio over HDMI.)

Be aware, however, that if you frequently watch media encoded with the HD audio formats or Atmos as examples from your NAS, that the HD/spatial audio won't work over TOSLINK. (If this is applicable to you, HDMI is required.)

Share the specific models of your TV, AVR & NAS too. Others with the same or similar hardware may be able to add additional information ;)!

I sometimes experience desynchronization issues with my older DVD rips, especially with .AVI files & Kodi (multi platform). I've remuxed most of them using MKVToolNix, problem solved :).

Thank you all for replies.

@notrui
- all my devices restarted, cache cleared
- I removed all apps from Minix because I need it only for Kodi, HBO Go and Netflix
- yes my ethernet is gigabit
- I'm using SQL for Kodi on my NAS so all configurations are on NAS. I have 5 devices all accessing Kodi on NAS
- using static IP on all my devices except mobile phones and tablet but for those I have DHCP reservations

@ArcticWolf
- that what I thought regarding Toslink cable. But I can configure my AVR to send audio via optical and video via HDMI. CEC/ARC will work in that combo because I had it before configured like that. When I set Minix to AUTO under Sound it chooses SPDIF and I loose audio so I have it on HDMI.
- regarding my HW specs they are NAS Dlink DNS-320L, AVR Yamaha HTR- 6130 (old one but still rocks), TV Philips 42PFK6549.

Last night I watched few movies in full HD with DTS without any issue. It seems only AVI is affected. My second device is still Mecool in my bedroom and on it I can play AVI without any issue. I've checked Kodi settings and they are identical on both devices.

Another thing I noticed on Minix there are two different FW update option. First one found under all apps showed me there are no updates but under Advanced Settings it found two updates, one from 2017 and another 2018. Didn't try to play AVI after update because it was to late. I will test it today.

So far I'm satisfied with Minix. If I compare it with M8S+ they are identical in HW specs where M8S+ has more memory available but I believe that's because of METRO GUI on Minix. M8S+ doesn't support HBO Go and Netflix (problem is with DRM licenses as far as I read). Also M8S+ is not supported as soon as it was released (no updates) but it is on 7.1 android version.
My next investment is Neo A2 Lite remote because HBO Go doesn't work with stock remote.

Regards.

How was it after the update? All works now?

AVI stuttering happens but not so often. Before it was on every file every 10-20min, now I can watch one whole episode and it won't happen but than it happens on next one.
